Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm filling up my Netflix queue. What is your all time favorite movie?

Not sure if it is my all-time favorite, but definitely up there is Signs. (We just watched it tonight - dh is planning to use it in a class he is teaching on religion.) It is suspenseful, heart-wrenching, and sometimes funny. What I love is the portrayal of the main character's (played by Mel Gibson) crisis of faith and search for meaning in life. Oh, and it's an alien movie.

I love old musicals:
The Music Man
Oklahoma
West Side Story etc....

This love seems to have passed to the littles. It is real fun to here 3 and 6 year old singing show tunes.

The Sound of Music - I even went to all the places on a tour...I hate tours...this is my all time favorite film, hands down. Nothing else comes close.

(related read-aloud: Surviving the Applewhites...about a not-quite-delinquent farmed out to an unschooling artistic family - when he's cast as Rolf, and the production unravels, Jake discovers he does care about something...excellent book!)

My Fair Lady
The Music Man
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (the first film)
Ben Hur
Dr. Strangelove
Holiday Inn
It's A Wonderful Life

Then, revealing my goony side:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Better Off Dead
Ghostbusters (NO sequels, ThankYouVeryMuch)
Plan 9 From Outer Space (completely stupid...)

I just LOVE The Princess Bride and Pride and Prejudice (A&E version). Those 2 are my absolute favourites. But I also really like It's a Wonderful Life, The Last of the Mohicans, High Noon, Rio Bravo, and Shane. I love those old westerns!!

Love the Princess Bride here too. My kids quote some line from this movie at least a couple times a week. "I'm waaaiiiitinggg" or if I tell someone "I mean it" I hear "Anybody want a peanut?".

I love the Pride and Prejudice A&E version and I am a devoted fan of the CBC "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea" series. (I hated the last one they made, "Anne of Green Gables the Continuing Story".) We are also big fans of "Road to Avonlea" TV miniseries. I love to look at Janet's kitchen. I wish they would just film the house sometime so I can see everything.

Hitch. We own it and probably watch it once a month for a good laugh.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is funny, too, although has more objectionable content.

It sounds like you need to laugh a little, so I thought these would help.

If you do need a good laugh and you don't have super-strict standards about movie content then I definitely second Hitch. It has a couple of bad moments and a couple of great moments. And the dance scene with the two male leads is worth renting the movie for all by itself.

In the "if you need a good laugh" department, we saw "Hot Fuzz" last spring at the end of a terrible week. We haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The movie is, I guess, violent. But I'm pretty sensitive to violence and this violence was so slapstick that it didn't bother me at all. My husband thinks its the ultimate conservative movie--such clear-cut good and evil.

Probably one of the funniest movie moments I have seen! I laugh just thinking about it.

I am a huge Will Smith fan, even though I don't like all of his movies. I think he is fun to watch.

My favorite since I was a kid has always been Tombstone (not terribly kid friendly.)

Others (which may be watched weekly, or several times weekly in this home and are kid friendly) include:

Fiddler on the Roof
Calamity Jane (with Doris Daye)
The Court Jester (with Danny Kaye)
1776

I am reading through this thread again and laughing at the inability of a bunch of homeschool moms to follow directions! Laura asked for our FAVORITE movie (as in singular) and we all start rattling off lists! What would we say to our kids if we asked for one favorite and they gave us a list of five? So, are we inattentive or just really indecisive?

At least I started by naming my favorite movie, and then threw out another suggestion to help with Laura's queue. And I am the queen of indecision!

Anyway, just an observation. Thanks for the giggle! I needed it today.

Us too! There ar all the documentaries from the History channel, and Discovery...and St. John Bosco and St. Rita and so many other lovely Catholic foreign films I had longed to see...

Ok - enough gushing - I just wanted to say how much I love Netflix, too.

Back to the regularly scheduled program.

Lord of the Rings (all of them)
A Walk to Remember
It's a Wonderful Life
Pride and Prejudice (the one that was on PBS earlier this year)

It's hard to pick just one but if I had to it would be Steel Magnolias. Yes, I'm a sucker for sappy movies.
