What do you do with your extra candy from Halloween? We have the children choose some of their favorites then the rest we send to work with dh. This year we received a lot of m&ms and will save them for baking. Any brighter ideas?

Wondering what you mean by "extra"?  Just the stuff kids don't like? We keep it on hand for guests. If I sent it to work with Don, he'd probably eat it.

I take out ALL the hard candy and send that with Mark to work. The men there love it.
We only keep the soft stuff (tootsie rolls, Starburst, etc.) so I don't have to worry about the kids choking too much.
I'm in luck this year! Chelsea's b-day was during our evacuation from Rita so I'm letting her have a party/sleepover this Friday night with a few friends. Our extra candy is going into the pinata...thus, home with the other children.

They get to pick a few pieces Halloween night, then they can trade in the rest for a present (Playmobil,craft stuff, maybe a DVD--something they all agree upon). I figure that the price of a present is a small one compared to all the sugar and artificial color and the effect it would have on our atmosphere. Dh has given up corn syrup for the forseeable future so he's eager to get it all out of the house .

All of the chocolate goes in a freezer bag and gets put in the freezer. I bring it out at for our Christmas party. Lollipops, ring pops and other "toddler friendly" candy stay in a big bowl that I have control of. After tomorrow I start tossing a few pieces everyday until it is gone.
Sending some to work with the hubby is a great idea.

Today we dumped it all out on the table and categorized it: chewy, hard, chocolate, gum, suckers and gluten-containing. The kids counted all from each category and we're going to graph it (great website...halfway down the page is a link to make graphs for kids). After that, I hope to slowly start throwing it away. I may let them "trade in" for a toy. A local pediatric dentist here gives any child (not just patients) $1 per pound. We may go drop it off there.

Glad to know we are not the only ones who eat the candy. 
I just spoke with a mom who sets the candy out for the "Halloween Fairy" to give to the poor unfortunate children who have none! And the kids (7 and under) are so serious about their obligation to the poor, it was so cute!

A friend recently told me she saves all kinds of extra candy for gingerbread houses at Christmas time.

Gosh, I view the chewy stuff as more choking hazards. I guess I need to read my parenting manual again!
This is our first Halloween doing a few T&T. I carefully read packages and find the candy that ds could eat without an allergy attack. I gave out "safe" candy to the ones that came to our door, because it would be what he would handle around the house, too.
It was his first taste of candy...and unfortunately, he has his father's sweet tooth...and his mother's love of tart! He loved the Smarties and Nerds....

I don't know which it is. My sister had to expel a hard candy from my ds at about age 3. I revived a boy that had already passed out in the grocery store once and he was choking on a dum-dum lollipop (I guess it came off the stick). OTOH, I've pulled off 2 caps with A)caramel and B)Bit-o-Honey. Yes....I've learned my lesson .
Now back to the original question..... . It never ocurred to me to take any of the candy except to eat it . I wish I'd heard of these ideas to use it up when the kids were little. It's too late now (unless I steal it when no one is looking). I just try to get it gone as quick as possible. My kids have friends who eat a little bit each day and save their candy until Easter or longer!

Gosh, I don't know, Jenn. That's my own theory. 
I choked on a round butterscotch candy when I was young. Mom practically turned me upside down to get it out. I've always had a fear of hard round candies ever since. (I still have a fondness for butterscotch candy, though )...despite the scary incident.
My f-i-l always carried round peppermint treats in his pocket for the grandkids. My dc all learned to come to me first and ask me to *quack it up, Mommy*. My 8 yr old still asks me to do this. *Mommy* is that paranoid.
I second Mary Ellen's suggestion for the chocolates. I've also frozen chocolate in the past and used it as stocking stuffers. But two of my dc don't eat chocolate.

This was funny. This morning, I found my 8 yr old in the kitchen. For breakfast, she had a glass of milk, a plate of fresh strawberries/whipped cream, and a lollipop on the side.

I almost choked on a Fig Newton...I was blue and my mother was almost to the point of calling an ambulance, she couldn't get it out. My grandmother is the one who managed one last upside down hit on the back. I don't remember the incident, but that probably explains my confusion.
But I do need to clarify...I do view the hard candies as hazards. I forget about Jolly Ranchers and round candies. I was thinking more of Skittles, Nerds, Sweet Tarts and Smarties...becuase that's what I have. And Lifesavers and Dum-Dums.
The good thing about having all sour candies in the house, at least for me, after a few, there's not much temptation. My mouth gets raw and I get heartburn from that citric acid.

I like your idea about using it for a pinata! You are a genius!
I let them each pull out 20 pieces, tied it really tight and put it up in a high cupboard. Now I will really have to work for it if I need a chocalate fix .
They pulled out the 20 pieces after they had been eating it all day . My littlest was just off the wall! In the past I have just let them eat it until it is gone, but this year we got A LOT of candy!

I must admit the kids decimate the candy themselves. My husband may break down and throw some of it away over the course of the next few weeks--but that's only if it lasts that long!
MacBeth--I loved the "Halloween Fairy" idea. It's too late for me to even think about pulling it off with my crew, but it's a lovely idea.

Some great ideas here for dealing with Halloween Candy Overload. However, I have to admit that we eat it all, for the most part  I noticed the children having Nerds this morning for breakfast...

We cheated -- we brought ours to our Co-op "All Saints Party" and left most of it there. I did allow my dc to have sa pouch of Peanuts' fruit snacks for breakfast dessert and when John-Paul (almost 3) got a BIG booboo on his toe, he talked me into a tootsie (get it?) roll for he and the other three (and it wasn't even 8 a.m. ) but they thought it was great and now they are very compliant in starting the school day (if Mom would ever get off the computer !

Dressing up 4 days in a row as colonial kids and then again as saints yesterday - not to mention the work involved in getting those costumes together! Hiking around the neighborhood for an hour or more on the actual night! After all that work, WE EAT IT!!
And, I think I eat more than the kids - I am sick right now!! Yuk! But that doesn't stop me for going back for more! The kids are having a piece right now and we haven't had breakfast yet. And, seriously, we are a mostly healthy eating family! I do maintain some control over it all and try to remember to throw in a 'brush your teeth twice' once in a while.
So glad to hear others actually eat the candy, too!
