I am wondering about going here. I am not a huge amusement park/roller coaster fan - but I heard this wa a good place for kids. Any views? Can it be done in a day from the DC area? Will be see a lot of Amish Pennyslvania? Any recommendations if we have to stay over?

When I was in this area, I stayed at the Harvest Drive Family Inn. I paid 100 dollars for an average room with full bath and three full beds. Although we didn't go, another couple asked if we were going to Dutch Wonderland and highly recommended it.

We go to Dutch Wonderland just about every year. It is a clean, family-oriented amusement park. I think your children will enjoy it.
We normally go during the weekday either the first week the park opens or the last week it is opened. The hours when we go are 10 - 5 or something close to it. We end up staying the whole day on the rides but never making it to the waterpark. The waterpark is more of a small area to cool off in.
Weekends are very crowded. Lines can be long for the Log Flume, Roller Coaster (which is tame compared to the larger amusement parks) and the Pipeline in the Waterpark section. We usually head for those first thing to avoid the lines later in the day.
Security will check your bags before you can buy your ticket. You can't bring food or drinks (including water) into the park. They have concessions stands and restaurants throughout the place. Compared to other places we've been too, food prices are high but not outrageous. If you want, you could pack a lunch and eat it at your car. You just have to be sure that everyone has their hand stamped or else you can't get back in without paying again.
I am of no help with hotels. We make it a day trip.

What a great place! Has anyone been there during December when they do winter wonderland? I'm brainstorming on somewhere to go for dd2's bday in December. She wont be getting a party so we usually go somewhere special.

Yep, we went to "The Dutch" (as my dh and his siblings call it  ) last December for the winter wonderland and it was wonderful! Very family oriented and Christian--the nativity displays were done nicely and there were lots of them.
We were in the RV, so I can't recommend a hotel. There's a campground right on the property and I'm sure there were hotels right on that same strip as the park.
While we were in the area we did all of the train museums and took a "Lunch with Santa" train ride.
It was fun, easy weekend with lots for everyone.

I went there as a child and liked it, but that's been a lot of years ago!
Has anyone ever gone to Knoebel's? That's one of my favorite PA amusement parks. Free parking, free admission, and use of their picnic groves. You can buy food there or bring your own. And there is actual shade, something you don't see too much at these parks. It's great for us since I'm not a ride person so I can just walk around for free. There is a little children's ride section, but there is also the Phoenix, which is supposed to be a famous roller coaster. Also log flumes, etc. Also a waterpark.

Knoebel's is THE BEST! My brother (who is the super fun guy of the family) rates Knoebel's #1 in happy family fun. Ooooooooooo now I'm craving their rice pudding in a cone, yum!
