We had our bug guy come today. Nice guy, young, has a three year old daughter. He saw our bumper sticker, which was a homeschooling themed one. He mentioned that his brother in LA was going to start homeschooling next year, and wanted to ask us about it.
At one point he says, "I just don't know about homeschooling, though." A few seconds later he begins to relate a horrible public school experience he had.
Our family doctor (also our friend so he was not over-stepping boundaries while he said this, it was playful) - before we convinced him of how great hs is - would tell my daughter how she should go to school, all the things she was missing, etc. Then later in the same conversation he would mention how he knew of so many kids at his son's school with drug-related - or STD related - problems.
It always kind of boggles my mind how in one breath people will suggest that homeschooling isn't a good idea, while in the same conversation - sometimes the next sentence - relating horror stories of their school experience.
Poor bug guy didn't realize he'd opened a can of worms though, as DH was home, and he proceeded to follow him around for the rest of the time talking about how great homeschooling was, and how great the kids were, and all the activities and opportunities, and even sent him home with literature.

I think people are much more comfortable with what they know, kwim?? so even if it is painful (bad school, etc) fear of the unknown (homeschooling) seems more threatening??
but the converse could be true as well. I did have a tiny fear of the unknown for our family (school) and it has turned out wonderfully for oldest ds and our family...
good for your dh!! I always like it when a dad speaks up. us moms usually are not short on words!!

LOL. That image made me laugh!
How sweet of your husband, though. Mine is like that -- he's a much better witness to hsing than I am IRL -- I will tend to say, "It has its good sides and bad sides" and he will be the one talking about all the opportunities and blessings and family closeness.
