I hope this is the right place to post this....
I'm thinking about getting my dh an iPod for Father's Day. He loves music but I think he would also enjoy the ability to hear audio-books. My question (which will clue you all in on how tech-UNsavvy I am!) is, can he use the iPod for audio-books? Can anyone tell me how it works?

that would be a yes!
there are many audio books he can download from itunes.
that is the program which is compatable and was designed to work with the ipod, you will need to download itunes if you don't have it already.
the other night i was making a "mix" for my dad for fathers day, and i downloaded many fun old songs. and that is the beauty of it, i just picked random songs at .99 each, and did not have to buy albums.
once you work with it a bit, it is a joy! a very nice present.
good luck!

Audio-books work fine - EXCEPT with an IPOD Shuffle. Because books download as chapters or sections, and an IPOD Shuffle....well, shuffles all the items on it, you won't get the chpaters in order. It'll be all random.
But now even the Nano can hold movies too. You would think with that little screen it wouldn't work well, but it actually does and the picture quality is excellent.
I have LOTR audiobook in my Nano. As I have tried and tried but never been able to read it (are they STILL walking through the forest???), this was a fun audiobook for me.

We haven't had this problem with my kids' Shuffles. You just have to make sure that the little button isn't on shuffle-mode.
I do like my Nano a lot better than their Shuffles, though. The visible menu is a must for me.
You can also download audio books from Audible.com, and their Audible Manager software puts it into your iTunes library for you.

Oh, I hear ya! I can never get past the middle of the second book!
I don't know a thing about ipods. My cell phone is also an Mp3 device, so I use that. My husband downloads our cd's onto our computer and then loads them onto my phone, somehow! He's magic!
Blessings,
Betsie

I wish audio books weren't so expensive . I have trouble paying $20 for something I'm not going to hold in my hand.

I know what you mean! I don't buy audiobooks for myself, because I just fall asleep when listening. I do buy them for my kids, but I've never paid more than $10 tops, and usually between $4-7. A free resource for audiobooks is LibriVox. These are non-professional recordings of books and poetry in the public domain, and we have found quite a few gems there.

I only buy audiobooks when they are absolute favorites that we want to listen to over and over--like the Little House books. All others I get from the library. You can download them onto your mp3, and then just delete when you are done (to avoid copyright infringement).
Another great way to use your ipod is listening to podcasts. They have some great Catholic podcasts out there, and you can even get some from EWTN.

Sigh...I've tried our library. They have a wonderful selection but they are only in a format that isn't compatible with I-Pod.

This is what I was concerned about. One of my ds's friends told him he got an MP3 player, but NOT an Ipod because he said he that Ipod had limited choices for downloads. I don't understand all this, but is that true?

Okay, I admit that I do not have any kind of mp3 player. I did, however, recently buy a new CD/radio for my husband's car. While choosing I found out that, in order to listen to our library's electronic books, the CD player had to be able to read ".wma" files (Windows Media). Any mp3 player that can play wma files is what you want, I think.
"eAudiobooks are books that you download from the Internet and listen to on your computer or any other device that can play Windows Media Audio (.wma) files."
hth!
Jen
eta: I could be wrong, but I think Apple ipods were slow to add wma support. From what I can tell, they, and other brands now mostly (all?) do support wma format.

Again, I'm NO expert ...
I just looked up Overdrive books, and they are delivered in a WMA format also. (link)
Some mp3s play them and some don't. It depends on age and brand.

Hmmm... All I know is what is on the library site.
OverDrive Audio Book titles, provided by OverDrive, Inc., use DRM protection technology from Microsoft Corporation. Unfortunately the iPod, iPhone, and Mac do not currently support DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files.
OverDrive, along with hundreds of online digital media providers, is hopeful that Apple and Microsoft can reach an agreement that would enable support for Microsoft-based DRM-protected materials on the iPod, iPhone, and Mac.
Is there a way to work around this?

I have not used this, but cnet has a decent review for this free download -- converts WMAs to MP3s...
free download
There are also commercially available programs that do the same thing.

You can also check out books on CD at the library and use your computer to rip them, then transfer to your Ipod or mp3 player. I do this for books which are not available on Overdrive. btw, each library system has its own Overdrive account, so if you have access to other library systems be sure to check them all - ours didn't have any copies of Journey to the Center of the Earth, but another one i have access to had 3 different versions!
I know lots of people are Ipod fans, but personally I prefer mp3 players - we've had 3 Creative models in our house (all still working). check out their website- they often have specials, including refurbished ones very cheap!
I have heard but can't confirm it, that this fall (?) the Overdrive software will be compatible with Ipods.

Thanks everyone. You've given me lots to think about. When I asked ds what he thought about getting Dad an iPod he thought it was a great idea and then said "You could just get me one too, since my birthday is coming up"! (Actually, that's what I was thinking but it bugs me that he said it!
