I put a bid on a statue on ebay but don't know who it is of!
It's a woman, in possibly a black habit but there looks to be gilt trim at the bodice edge, so maybe just a posh long black dress and black veil. She holds a crucifix, has what is described as a wreath on her arm and a "bundle of sticks" at her feet.
Any ideas who it might be?

Can you link to it, Lucy? I'm very bad at conjuring up a picture based on a description.

I don't get any great ideas from the image, but I will venture a guess. St. Brigid of Ireland? The reason I say that is that one of the stories I've heard of her is that she would visit peasants and, while talking with them about God, she would take into her hands straw, twigs, and such that were on the floors of their cottages and twist them into a cross. When her visit was over, the poor people who could not furnish their homes with decorative objects now had a cross to remind them of what they had heard during her visit. This is the origin of the straw St. Brigid crosses that we have even today. So, I'm guessing that the stick at her feet are the things on the floor of the cottages that she would use to make crosses. Maybe?
Peace,
Nancy

That could be it Nancy, as St Brigid is often depicted in black.

There is also that legend about St. Brigid and the fire (at her monastery, maybe?) that never goes out. Apparently there were twenty nuns in her time but there have been only nineteen since but each time they get to the twentieth night they leave the fire for Brigid to tend and it is still going in the morning--maybe the sticks are her fuel for that fire?
Otherwise, the symbolism doesn't match that well--Brigid is usually in black but has a lamp or Abbess's staff. But, I haven't seen anything else that matches so maybe this is a non-traditional St. Brigid. Let us know if you get it Lucy and who you decide she is.

It's St Rita!!!! My sister was looking at this thread today and she looked over at her statue of St Rita (made in South America) and she is in black, holding a cross and has a bundle of sticks at her feet!
St Rita is a beautiful saint Lucy, she is the patroness of impossible cases, infertility, marriage difficulties to mention the ones I can recall myself. I have crushed leaves from the miraculous grape vine that came to life after she was made through obedience, to water a dead grape stick, it is given out for those who are sick. I also have some rose petals from rose bushes that come from the original miraculous rose tree in which she received confirmation that her husband was in heaven...oh I could go on, she's a really beautiful saint.
Here is a link to her that tells of her life and lists a whole host more things she is patroness of.
Did you win the bid?

That's St. Rita? Dh suggested that and I said no way because I thought the thorn wounds would be on her head. Yesterday (her feast day) was my birthday and I developed a devotion to St. Rita all last year before discovering that I was born on her feast day. We watched the first half of the St. Rita movie last night and we loved it. She is a great saint, Lucy. I hope you can win the statue!

It does seem unusual that some leave off the wound mark...here are some more statues that have these reeds/sticks/maybe a penitent lash?..at her feet:
Statue 1
Statue 2 (you might have to scroll down to St Rita and click on her image)
Statue 3
Each statue varies slightly with their symbols...I'd love to know exactly what the pile at her feet is..
Lucy here is a great site on St Rita and also where I got my St Rita sacramentals

By the way, I highly recommend the St. Rita movie, so inspirational. And it brought up a great talk here about obedience and humility.

It (I think it was a movie and not just a special) was on EWTN last night, but I missed it...with reading this thread, I was really interested in seeing it. I need to look for the movie now:)

WE got it from Netflix and have only watched the first half (it's 3.5 hours long!). Be warned: some details of her life are majorly changed. But so far we think it is still fantastic and has really shown how complicated it is to live in sin and live with sin. We're really looking forward to finishing it.
