No, not a basketball post!

There is a chance that we may be moving in a year or so, due to dh's job possibly ending (another long, sad post as the Symphony here looks like it's closing up shop ) Anyhoo, our 2 main choices are near Kansas City, MO and near Lawrence, KS because of close family and interesting rich "cultures" of those cities. I grew up outside KC.

My question is, how is homeschooling in those states as far as reqirements, laws etc. Any 1st hand knowledge would be very helpful! TIA.

Hi cm4!

I live in Wichita, Kansas. Kansas is VERY homeschooling-friendly. The only thing that is required is that you fill out a form that registers your homeschool as a non-accredited private school with the state of Kansas one time only. That's it!

I don't know what the environment is like in Lawrence, but it is very homeschool friendly in Wichita. Our bishop is supportive of homeschoolers, most of the priests are supportive, and some of the Catholic parish schools even open some of their extra-curricular programs up to homeschoolers. I receive only positive or neutral comments from neighbors and strangers when I tell them that we homeschool.

Kansas is an easy place to HS, as Dawn said.

In the Kansas City metro there are Catholic HS groups on both sides of the state line.

The only advice I will offer is that if you live within the city limits of Kansas City, MO, you will be subject to a 1% earnings tax which is not imposed anywhere else in the metro area.

Kansas City, KS is much more affordable than KCMO or the suburbs for the most part, and is probably vastly different now than when you were growing up....there's been a lot of development in the western areas of the city in the last few years.

As far as extracurricular programs, parish sports programs (CYO) have a heavy emphasis on the schools becuase that's where there are a lot of children, but all children in a parish are eligible to participate. On the Kansas side of the state line, the program is very well run, and quite large.

We used to live in St. Louis. MO is also an easy place to homeschool, as far as the law goes... you're required to do 1000 hours (600 of those in core subjects), keep a log, and prepare a portfolio. There is no communication with the school district at all and no standardized testing.
