We will have a chance to spend several days in Philly in the near future. Any ideas on what we should do with our 4 and 6 yr. old? Most of the activities I can think of are good for older kids. I would also love any picture book suggestions that are about or take place in Philadelphia or Penn.

I will let my friend X-Hail who lives near Philly know about your question and see if she has time to chime in. The Philadelphia Zoo is the oldest in the country, and is supposed to be really nice. Our kids loved the Crayola factory and Amish country which are a bit outside of Philly. Valley Forge Park is fun and there's lots of space for little ones to move around. And the Liberty Bell is impressive even for little ones.
Hopefully, I can get you some more input from someone who knows better than me.

I would recommend watching the musical 1776, then touring Independence Hall. Also the Strasburg Railroad was a huge hit with our kiddos.

We visited Philly when my son was 7. We had the BEST time. My son was really excited about all things American Revolution and he had the best day of his little life that day.
Are you kids familiar with Liberty's Kids? The show fed a couple year's worth of obsession for my son. I'm not sure if it's still on TV or available on CD...
First stop: Independence Visitor Center. They will direct you to kid oriented activities.
We visited the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall (a little dry, maybe), attended a militia mustering and participated in a parade led down the street by "Thomas Jefferson", learned how to move in formation as a militia and hold a "musket", and received fencing lessons at the Betsy Ross house. My son was agog seeing Benjamin Franklin walking down the street.

Oh I was swooning over downtown Philly so much I forgot to mention we also went to Valley Forge National Historic Park. My son LOVED the visitor's center. We did the driving tour, using the CD sold at the visitor's center, and got out at several stops to see where George Washington slept, etc.
Another day went to Washington Crossing Historic Park. That visit was a quiet walk along the river sort of time. Well one of us marched with a musket and the rest of us walked. Boy he was completely in character, that trip. 
Get a Passport to Your National Parks to collect stamps too, while you're visiting!

You could cross over the bridge to NJ and go to the NJ Aquarium in Camden. I have never been, but I have heard good things about it and want to get there myself. If you like flowers you could check out Longwood Gardens. And, someone suggested the Crayola Factory, which I have to say I was not impressed with. It isn't much of a factory and I really felt like it was just a place to get you to buy the merchandise. But maybe it has improved since I was there.
