school, that is. We are closing on our new house Wed. and actually moving on Sat.; doing the move ourselves since it's only 5 miles. Needless to say, I'm a bit overwhelmed at present trying to school, pack, and still have food to eat and clothes to wear.
I think this bothers me so much because we started home schooling when we moved here (16 mos. ago)and the kids were behind then. We are still "behind", meaning we cannot finish this year's work before this school year is officially over. If we stop now, I know we can just pick up where we left off but how do we ever get to a place where we are starting "fresh?" Or do we just keep plugging away, wherever the kids are in their lessons?
Hmmmm...typing this, I felt my heart rate go up. Apparently it's stressing me more than I realize. I feel sometimes, that I'm letting the kids down by not getting on top of this "behind" issue. Still, I know we are doing what God wants us to do as far as educating them at home. Please share your opinions/thoughts.

You can stop. 
Chances are good that whatever you would use next will review in the beginning. For you, it won't be review--you'll either finish up in your current books and then skip the review in next year's work or you'll skip the finishing and consider next year's "review" for the first time. It's all good. Now, go get settled into your new home.

We have moved twice since beginning homeschooling and we have always taken (at least) two weeks off "the plan" when we've moved.
That said, we have never once completed "a year" the way I projected at the beginning of "the year". I put the year in quotes because learning doesn't start and stop at any particular time here. Does your state have particular requirements that you must meet? We just keep plugging away, or we move on to something else when a plan ceases to work for our life as it is in the moment. If that makes any sense at all...

Moving and school just don't work. Please accept my personal blessing on the end of your school year! You can fill in some gaps over the summer via field trips, nature study in parks in your new home town, etc.
I never try to do school during a move. It's just hopeless!

Go ahead and stop! We have. We school year round but we move May 10th and i had planned on getting one last week of school in before the movers come next week but we got sick and well, it's our last week to really be able to do things in japan so school can wait.

We are moving this weekend! And we are stopping. We already moved once (at Christmastime), but this is all the furniture and stuff coming into our house. No time to unpack, organize, cook meals, wash laundry and lesson plan!
My ds will finish his online literature course, but we will unpack during the next few weeks. Over here, they go to school until the end of July, so we will pick up again a bit later and finish the year then.
To much work to try and do it all!

Thank you all for your responses. I feel better about calling it quits for now. Maybe when we get into the really hot part of summer we'll do a few things.
My dh just heard from the realtor and they are changing the closing from tomorrow until ?? maybe Thursday or Friday. I am so frustrated, as I had help all lined up for packing/unpacking the kitchen before the big move on Saturday. So much for planning....

If it's any help, none of my kids have ever finished a textbook or workbook. At least, not that I can remember. There's always some fluffy stuff that gets repeated at the next level, anyway, so I've never seen a gap result.

You have enough on your hands. Last year I had to start preparing for showing our house in April. There was a lot to pack up and do. I concentrated on subjects the boys could do by themselves for the most part.
From the point we put the house up for sale, all the homeschool materials were put away. There were too many other things going on!

I know you have already made your decision, but I'd like to chime in with hearty STOP, STOP, STOP! That's the beauty of homeschooling and Real Learning, just because the books stop opening doesn't mean the learning stops. Take the time to check out a few books on tape (or CD) from the library and listen to them as you all go about the business of moving. I heartily recommend Peter Pan read by Jim Dale, that's what we listened to when we were moving awhile back.
