Okay...so I was bopping around yahoo groups trying to find local homeschool groups due to our upcoming move....
...and I ran across this one:
The Affluent & Elite Homeschoolers of Las Vegas.
I was amused, and read their little description. So...what I am wondering is...
...am I reading too much into it? Is it just wanting the "best" for their kids?
...or is there really an air of the "better than thou" attitude there? Which is how I read it, but I could be wrong.
I just wondered what others thought of it. What would you take it to mean?

Hey Laura,
Can you email the moderator for more info or a better definition than their home page info?
I think the fact that they only have 4 members (unless they're new) is pretty telling...but that's just me and my constantly positive attitude.

Interesting . . . I think it reads that they are looking for fellow homeschoolers who have their children's finacial futures as a higest priority.
That just goes to show that homeschooling isn't just for "religious fanatics" like us! (please note the humor!!)

I could be wrong but my thoughts were your initial ones as well, Laura. I'm figuring larger than average Catholic homeschool families who live frugally and are raising children for heaven (not Harvard) would not qualify for membership.
I know families like this - not any that homeschool though. Mostly these families are in the very best prep schools that money can buy. So am intrigued that there are even some families who would describe themselves like this who choose to homeschool. Probably are unhappy with even the "best" schools to get their children the edge in life. I would imagine that there is a lot of private lessons and tutoring going on here.

I suppose our family could be considered "affluent",but I would never consider to call myself elite. How pretentious are these people. We live a frugal lifestyle and pray that we raise saints for God.

My first reaction was, they are joking, that is down right funny to me. Elite Homeschoolers, that may be an oximoron!!

I'm glad you posted. I read it and ROTFL but hesitated to post that, afraid I was being mean
Seriously though, I'm not surprised there are people who think this way. When we first started homeschooling our only exposure was to people who homeschooled because they believed they could raise their kids better to be SUCCESSFUL in the world, e.g., to be "movers and shakers", wealthy entrepreneurs, jet-setters, etc. They were also Christians but the success/money were definite goals for them and their kids. (yes, they were also in a pyramid scheme that we, I'm ashamed to admit, had gotten suckered into) Another initial goal of ours was to provide our kids with "the best" education, e.g., patterned after "elite" programs being offered at expensive private schools. (This was also the reason behind the initial appeal of Latin.)
I'm so glad we found Catholic homeschoolers almost immediately... and Catholic CMers eventually... which led to our own education and a refining of our goals for homeschooling. Our first goal in homeschooling was really more material, and now after many years of growing, praying, and learning, it's evolved into the spiritual.

My parents used to be part of Amway, and most of the top people homeschooled their kids because they traveled so much that they couldn't put them in school. This sounds like something they would be interested in
