I was a widow for 5 years with 2 little ones and decided to "jump start" my life by moving to Raleigh, NC (ok, it's not exactly NY but it seemed to be where God was leading me).... I got a job teaching computers k-8 in the parochial school and they shoe-horned my then 3rd grader and 1st grader into the school ... dh was the middle school science teacher right down the hall ... we never really dated but just somehow (grace of God) came together and got married that Spring ... actually my son Joe told him "it's easy Dr. G, just get down on one knee and ask mom to marry you" -- and that was it!
yep, the marriage of science and technology (and all the middle school girls thought that was SO ROMANTICCCCCC! )

My husband was a student in the zoology lab I was teaching at the university. We were both single parents at the time and when I saw him being so sweet and gentle with his children I just melted!

I met DH through an ad on AOL romance boards back in 1995. I had placed an ad (ok, I admit, I had placed a number of ads through the years -- I even did it when it all went through the newspaper and people had to write actual letters and mail them to the paper who would forward them on. I had fun on blind dates )
ANYWAY, this particular ad I had decided I was ready to settle down (I was 27) and had been praying for God's will at my parish, St. William's.
I went on a bunch of dates from that ad. Then I went out of town for work. Came back to a few emails from the ad and started calling. I called DH and said "Hi, this is Melanie from AOL" and he said "who?" and I said "AOL??" and he said "Huh?" and I said "You responded to a personals ad on AOL? It was a week or so ago, but I was out of town . . . " and FINALLY the light went off in his head. (He had only been on AOL briefly and so wasn't familiar with calling it AOL even -- he thought of it as America Online)
We talked for a while, I found out he was a contractor and got excited because I had a thing for guys in workboots. We made plans to meet Friday night.
I made a few more phone calls and made dates for Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch. (all in public places. I usually met these guys in one of 2 different restaurants and my parents knew where I was, etc.)
Friday night, I was waiting outside the restaurant and he was about 10 minutes late. I thought he was going to stand me up (had happened once before.) But, then he starts walking up with a short goatee (which I totally didn't like usually, but I thought it was so darned cute on him!) and we had dinner.
After dinner, we went to the movies. And then talked in the parking lot until the middle of the night.
I went on my Saturday dates, but kept thinking of him. I went on my Sunday date, but kept thinking about him. Sunday night he called and asked if I wanted to go to a movie and we started seeing each other all the time!
7 days later, he proposed. 2 years later we married.
Oh, and he didn't own a pair of work boots. So, I bought him a pair and he wore them to our wedding ceremony. The priest asked "Are you SURE Melanie knows you're wearing those??"
He goes by Bo, but his given name is William. (that's why I include the name of our parish up there.) He is definitely a gift from God and I try to remember that each and every day.

I served four yrs in the US Coast Guard. we ended up being stationed at the same station.
we knew each other for about a year. but it only took me 6 months to know that he was a very cool guy. nice, kind, family orientated etc... and he was a hard worker.
and he is very cute lol. that did not hurt.
so I tried to get his attention for 6 months.. but he was a rule follower. couldn't date me cause of rank and the fact the we worked together.
I wore him down after 6 months and then we dated in secret for a yr. a couple of people knew.
my enlistment was nearing it end and we had gotten pretty serious.. so i got out. just before that, he proposed. we got married about 10 months after that.
he teases me. the first time I drove into his station I noticed a cool VW van in the parking lot. I 'fell in love' with the van. didn't know he owned it. he says I married his van, not him! lol.
side note.. two yrs ago he had to sell his beloved first car... it was a sad day in our house.

Nothing exciting here. His employer contracted a lot of work through my employer, and we had seen each other in various offices. My best male friend at work kept telling me he wanted me to "meet" him, but I really wasn't interested in meeting anyone, especially someone younger than me.
I went out one Friday night (October 3, 2003) with some friends from work, and he actually walked in about an hour later. Truthfully it was not planned. He came over and started talking with us, and frankly I was quite smitten!
We have been "together" ever since that fateful night, which was his birthday. He told me meeting me was the best birthday gift he had ever received. At the time I thought it was a line, but now I know so much better!

We met while working in one of UCLA's libraries. It was a great job - we checked in new magazines and newspapers, 11,000 subscriptions, and we could read on the job.
Things were tangled at the time we met, but we figured out all that stuff and started dating the following fall. We married right after he graduated (I am 1 1/2 years older). One year later, we were sent to Italy by the Navy and we've moved nine times (and counting) since then.

My DH and I met at a math talk given by the famous mathematician Benoit Mandlebrot. The talk was part of a series that is given most years in the math department at Lehigh University. There is actually a picture hanging in the math dept at Lehigh that records the day! I was a senior in college and Tom was in his first year at Lehigh. I must have made quite an impression on him because he said he made sure he got his hair cut before I arrived on campus for good the following fall We spent alot of time talking at the math dept picnic that kicks off every school year. We spent the fall semester with our offices sharing a wall and a radiator. He helped me study for a big test right before the start of my second semester and after I aced the test he let his intentions be known How nice of him to not try to interfere with my test! By May we were engaged and the following May we were married.
We should have met many times before as our paths crossed many times. He attended my hs senior prom with a girl from my class and my hs graduation. I went to college with one of his brothers and we had a class together. He was also at my college graduation. The summer before I started graduate school, a friend the 2 of us have in common told me repeatedly "you are going to marry Tom Shimkus and produce a race of dwarfs" (Tom is 5'3" and I am not even 4'11"). He was right! Although, our children do not seem to be as short statured as us, but it is still early for them.
Tom and I both graduated from Lehigh with PhDs in math. Math is often discussed around the dinner table here, which always makes Mary Ann (momtomany) laugh

We were first semester college freshmen. A friend I had known from home was at the same college. He had gotten to know dh and told me I really should get to know him, I would like him, etc. I pretty much ignored this with a Yeah, Yeah, blah, blah, that's nice sort of attitude. Then one evening I wanted to check out the solution to a physics problem with one of my classmates, who happened to live on the same dorm floor. When I went down there (a lower floor in my same dorm), 6 or 8 of the guys from the floor (including dh) were just hanging out. So, what the heck, my old friend had suggested that I might want to talk with him some time. Okay, now was *some time*. As the hanging out and talking evolved, he and I were interested in some part of the conversation that the others had moved on from, so we went out in the hall and continued talking. My friend was right. I did like him. He asked if we could eat lunch together the next day. And the rest is history. Like 36 years of history.
Peace,
Nancy

I love telling our story. It's more fun when dh is around to chime in. I went to college north of Boston at the same time as dh was getting a master's at Boston College. His uncle was a professor at my school and he spent a lot of time with that family. The uncle brought dh to hear the senior recital of a fantastic pianist in our music department. The pianist is a close friend--like family--of dh's family. I was a music major and friends with the pianist so I went, too, but alone and no one had saved me a seat. Even though I was really early there was only one good seat left--right next to dh. I hate sitting next to strangers, especially young, male strangers but he was sitting next to friends of mine so I took the seat. We were introduced and, like a good Midwesterner, he struck up a conversation (I would have sat silently through the entire recital if left to my own devices). We talked for the entire twenty minutes before the recital started. During the first half I was thinking, "Hmm. This guy is Catholic. I'm thinking about coming back to the Church. Maybe he can help me out with book ideas." Dh was thinking, "I could marry this girl. But I'm going into religious life. But she must be Protestant at a school like this. I'll tell her I'm Catholic to scare her off." That worked like a charm. He worked the Catholic thing into the conversation immediately after intermission started and I lit up. We talked for the whole intermission and for awhile afterwards.
This is getting long . . . We had a slow start, but, in short, I reverted several weeks later. He gave up religious life. We got engaged in Toronto at World Youth Day with 800,000 people cheering for us (or were they cheering for the Holy Father--I can't remember ) We were married about two years after we met. His mom takes all the credit because she was in Boston visiting that weekend and decided last minute not to go to the recital, thereby leaving that seat vacant.

I was 19 and we had just moved to the US the year before.
When we first arrived in St. Louis, my uncle and his friends tell us about "this group of guys who graduated from your university" and that I should meet them. But I had no interest in meeting these people and was horrified to think that my uncle thinks that's a good idea.
A year later, I meet dh at the dental school where I was working as a secretary (waiting for my transcript to arrive so I can finish my last 2 years of college -- that's another story -- they "overlooked" my papers and if I had not gone home because my grandma was sick I would probably still be waiting for my transcript now)... a Filipina dentist who was studying again so she can get licensed here introduced us -- he was her patient...
She comes and says "you have to meet this guy who went to your university" -- I go "how old?" "25." Methinks: yuk, too old!
So I meet him, and he kinda looks nice but a bit on the arrogant side (he was here through AIESEC which at our university was considered elitist) ... until we got to talking and he was REALLLLY nice. Turns out he was one of "the guys" my uncle knew -- they were on first-name basis, and he had to switch to calling my uncle "Uncle" when we got married.
I can't believe how much I had in common with a guy six years my senior!! We did the typical Filipino thing -- courtship (chocolates, roses, visits at home, group dates) -- he basically courted my parents while courting me. They were smitten as much as he says he was .
I said 'yes' 2 months later on his 26th birthday (this is the initial Filipino "yes" which means, yes, I'll go steady with you) -- then 'I Do' 2 years later on his 28th birthday.
Oh, but before that initial 'yes', I said, "my head is in love with you already but my heart isn't". My dd-17 asked him about it recently and he doesn't remember anymore .
Sorry this is so long -- I can talk forever when it comes to my dh!!

We met in 1985 when he was dating a school friend of mine who (to my and my other girlfriends' shock) dumped him for being "too nice". I like nice (and cute, fit and intelligent!) so he asked me out and the rest is history. He's been "nice" ever since - to my very good fortune!!! :)

I met my husband on a NET retreat in high school. I was 15 and he was 17 - it's been almost 10 years since we met! I was there alone, and he was there with a youth group- and as the cute, youth minister's son, the girls in his group were very possessive of him and didn't much enjoy the attention he paid to me. The retreat was a week long, and we didn't meet until that Wednesday. I remember the moment he walked in the door on the first day though. He's super tall, and he ducked under the low door way and looked up. I saw his piercing blue eyes and something just moved within my soul. (As a funny side note, I had told my mom before I left for the retreat that I had a feeling that I would meet someone who would be important in my life!)
We had a long distance courtship (he was from Houston, I was from Dallas/Fort Worth area - about 5 hours), which was actually really good because I a)learned to type really fast and properly due to instant messaging, b)was not distracted from my regular high school life and friends, and c)my parents were heavily involved in our relationship - and they absolutely love him to this day. We knew almost from the beginning that we were meant to be married, which was actually a struggle for me at times because I felt as if I was so young to already be at that point. I do feel so blessed that we have been growing up together though!
Anyway, he went to Austin for college, and I did as well 2 years later. We got married when I was 20 and he was 22 and immediately conceived our first child. God has been sending them fast and furious since then - I am 25 with 3 children!

We met at a small private Catholic college in North TX. He had transferred in from another Catholic college on OH. I saw this new, cute guy around campus but figured that the tiny little red head with him was his girlfriend. When I had some problems with my laptop, the guys in the computer lab kept telling me to talk to "Sean" about it. There were two Sean's. I thought they meant the other one. Turns out they meant the cute guy with the red headed girlfriend... who turned out to be his sister. Thank goodness! Like Andrea, I just knew instantly!
We dated "small college style" for two months before he proposed in the middle of a tornado warning in my dorm. Our life has been a whirlwind ever since!

I met my husband my senior year of college. I was determined not to get involved with anyone because I figured I would be moving back home after graduation. Anyway, one of my best male-friends and I were walking back from an early afternoon night class. When we got to "the valley" in which his dorm and my dorm were across from each other, there were two guys sitting on a bench. One was playing guitar while the other one sang. My friend knew them both and introduced me. I looked right at them and said, "You two are just doing that to meet girls. I hang out with too many music majors; I know the drill." Well, the singer who would become my husband said, "Yeah, you're pretty much right."
We saw each other around campus a few times and gave the cursory nod but that was it for a few months. Then one night another friend and I stopped by the local pub. He was there with my guy friend. And for some reason I don't know I felt compelled to give him a hug. After that we talked all night. When he found out that I was saving myself until I was married, he asked me to marry him. I told him "no" but that I would go on a date with him.
We were engaged about three months later. I stuck around my college town while he finished up his last year. We got married the weekend before his spring break, so we could use spring break for our honeymoon. That was eight years ago in March.
