Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

St. Josemaria Escriva writes: "Live as others around you live, with naturalness, but 'supernaturalizing' every moment of your day."

Someone shared this quote in a comment on Leonie's blog. It falls in quite naturally to my reading selections this past Lent (which are still ongoing):

Mother Teresa's new book: Come Be My Light
The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur

If you all don't mind, I'd like to shred this quote, squeeze it and peel it apart and learn from it.

Can anyone share their thoughts on how we "supernaturalize" every moment while living in the "real world"?

Very interesting subject Cay. Did you read my blog post on Sanctifying the Moment? Since I wrote that I have thought about how it applies in the day to day moment to moment stuff. Can't wait to read what others share.

Cay,

it's quite funny that you posted this quote as we were just watching a vocations movie last night (dh is trying to help his senior theology students understand that vocation is WHATEVER/WHEREVER God calls you to be) done by Opus Dei and this quote was in that movie and really struck me....

Here are some random thoughts:
This is a fascinating synthesis of what JP2 asked of us, what Jesus asked of us, and what I believe God wants of us ... to live each moment as if it were our last ... to live our religion in thought, deed and word regardless of whether today is Sunday or Thursday ... to treat all as if they were Jesus ...

This is so hard for me to do ... but it's a wonderful goal! It's the act of self-giving over self-centeredness ... the act of sacrificing my will to His will ... it's a universal call that I need to hear a bit better (of course, that would need I'd need to close my mouth and LISTEN, but y'know .... )

I am reading Come Be My Light too! And yes, I think we live well in a natural way, but the supernatural part comes in where we pray for our enemies, we don't return evil for evil. We see in the mundaneness of daily circumstances not only God's will for us, but a mission, an active call to serve Him... ...Live with the knowledge that we are ultimately on our way to Heaven, and we want to take as many others with us as we can.

We operate in the knowledge that when things are stressful, when those awful moments of life come to us, we stop and we run to Jesus Embrace, acknowledging that He is big enough.

Just some thoughts... Not all that articulate. Thanks for the quotation, I will chew on that.

we call it "practicing the present moment" at our house, but it means the same thing. Ds, 11, just said "supernatural" has a better ring to it, LOL!
One little tidbit the Community of St John taught me was that not only do we need to listen and be present to Christ in our neighbors, our family, etc but that Christ longs for us to be still and to listen to Him as well. At first it was kind of a "duh" moment for me, but then they went on to describe how we can tend to bring our busyness with us to prayer. The rosary, the spiritual reading book, the Bible, the journal to the Adoration Chapel or in our morning prayers. The kind of "spiritual checklist" that we can try to get through just like a grocery store list.
anyway, for me it was life changing when I went to Adoration with nothing except myself. wow, the first 15 min or so were the hardest, but then the time flew by. of course there is great merit to studying (they are Thomists and have advance philosophy degrees as well) Scripture, works of the Church, Saints, the Rosary, etc, but they told me that if I can be present and just listen to Christ , then I will do a better job at being present to my dh, my kids, my IRL next door neighbor, etc.
A lot more listening, a lot less "doing", kwim??

I love reading (if you can call it that.. usually I just pick up my book(s) and open it up to see what is speaking to me on a given day lol) St. J.E.'s books. and during Lent I too read that quote...

"Live as others around you live, with naturalness, but 'supernaturalizing' every moment of your day."

my thoughts vary...
but keep coming back to

live in my world but not of my world.

to strive to be holy, to give my struggles AND my joys to God. to keep my eyes (and heart) on Jesus and my ultimate goal in Life... to met Him in Heaven.

how to go about that is almost endless.
I imagine since each of us is different, in all aspects of our lives, that we would go about achieving this differently.
and I am sure my path strays through out my days.. LOL. kind of like waking in a meadow. you are crossing it, yes, but there is so much to see in the middle, that the goal of crossing gets postponed with 'life'. the sheer beauty of it. but also the mundane.... and the ugly....
but to keep walking would be to miss life completely will crossing. so stopping and 'living as others around us, with naturalness', keeps us connected and open to others.

it seems like it would be easier to close ourselves off and live to achieve our 'goal'. but we would be isolated, and alienated. I don't believe that God intended that for us.
and if we did that, we would miss those opportunities to help someone or be helped/guided alone our journey...

(maybe more to come....)"Live as others around you live, with naturalness, but 'supernaturalizing' every moment of your day."

an quick example of this is I have a friend (now) who attends my parish. She was very negative toward my family size, and kids in general. The "WOW, you have your hands full!!" type person, but really negative comments even about her own kids like "Im so glad I only have 3, oh and the 3rd was really a mistake, ", and so on.
I decided that I was going to really listen to her no matter if she went off on those tangents 10 times or 100 times. and that the only thing I would say is something positive about her mothering or about her kids.
Long story short, we are very close friends now and dh and I are godparents to their 5th child!! I do not want to toot my own horn at all, it is all God. She told me that I was the first one who didn't make a witty reply back and keep going, and that the more bitter she became the MORE I seemed to show up at the right time, or listen to her, where she felt like everyone else was either acting "above her(judging)" OR encouraging her to continue in her negativity with regards to family size, "being done" etc.
and now, time to stop being present to this computer!

I've been thinking about a similar thing this week. I've been calling living each moment deliberately. I have been focusing on not being on auto-pilot, but to talk, answer, guide, clean, etc. with deliberate actions, especially with my dh and children -- Thinking and praying before I do anything.
