Ok I hope I don't sound lame, but what does crunchy mean? What all does it entail? Just curious

Jess, I just found out what it meant this year. 
It means you're nutty...crunchy. 
Welcome to the crowd. 
[ETA: HS moms with large families are basically thought to be "nuts". Thus the nickname.  ]

I've never used the term "crunchy" by itself. In my family, we always alwys use it to describe people who are "crunchy granola" in other words, the all natural sort who make their own bread, clothes, their own granola, etc.

I think the term has come into play lately because of this book.
I loved it, I'm not a total cruncher but I am pretty nutty.

I have always heard Crunchy to mean earthy, natural. Kind of a Birkenstock-wearing, no make-up wearing, organic food eating, commune with nature sort of person.
By the way, if you haven't read the book Maddie referenced, you are really missing out!

Yes, that's what I heard. That it started when people going all natural ate granola. And it happens to be crunchy.

Oh ok I understand now! I guess I kind of fall into that category, not totally but I am trying to get closer I guess. I have been longing to get more natural in foods, etc, but it can be so hard!
I put that book in my amazon cart, looks interesting.

I forgot to add, if anyone has any tips on how to be more "crunchy" I would really appreciate it! I would love to go all organic in food and products, but we just can't afford it. So I guess what I mean is how can I be frugally crunchy? I have tried going to things like pure maple syrup and more whole foods and all I get is complaints from everyone. Any tips would be great! Thanks so much!

Not to mention that the best place around here to purchase organic is over an hour away!
My kids react the same way too about more natural/whole foods. My family is sooooo NOT crunchy!

Frugal and "crunchy" has been our challenge for almost 2 years now. It does get easier as you go, but it isn't cheap and something has to be sacrificed to do it in our house. Little sacrifices in eating out have been the biggest way we've made room in the budget.
My advice Jess? Pick one area of your pantry and start there. I started with meats - researching, searching for a local farmer who raised pasture fed cattle and pork, saving and finally purchasing. Then we moved on to bread - we grind our own wheat and make our own bread. And from there transitioning convenience and boxed/processed foods out of the pantry while bringing more organic whole foods in. It took months for each venture into "crunchiness" to feel comfortable and like it was fitting into the family plan and budget. So don't be afraid to go really slowly.
We also found some things the family just doesn't want to give up. I don't fight since there aren't too many. But, as we journey through this, there are fewer and fewer things they complain about.

I was thinking the same thing! Hysterical! Forget the politics, the slang-term, the societal sub-culture of it all......get to the important stuff.....THE RECIPE!!!!
Here is Rod's blog (the author of "Crunchy Con" - the book Maddie linked to).
He was Roman Catholic up until a year ago, when he converted to Eastern Orthodox.

I go to Rod's blog daily. "Crunchiness" also includes being environmentally aware (recycling, composting) and homeschooling. Rod's Crunchy Conservatism kind of combines hippy life-style aspects with religious and political conservatism.

KC, I know what you mean! Organic is so so expensive here! I do buy a few things organic but if I go too far into whole foods and organic, I end up spending the same amount and come out of the store with a quarter of the stuff  Plus the kids look at me like I'm crazy if I try to make oatmeal or something besides waffles or cereal for breakfast. Then it goes to waste because they won't eat it. They won't eat eggs, beans, brown rice, oatmeal (unless it comes out of the box), or pasta---and those things are cheap! So when I fix them, they don't get eaten and then it is wasted, because I can only eat so much! That can't be very frugal!
We recycle and compost and garden and try not to use pesticides outdoors and I am working on more whole/organic foods, so I guess we are getting crunchier
Jennifer, thanks for the advice to start with one thing in the pantry. I guess I am just afraid that if (hopefully) our family gets larger but our income doesn't I don't know how we will feed everyone healthy foods.
