Summer is approaching, and I need a sun hat to protect my skin and scalp. Does anyone wear one in the summer? What does it look like and where did you get it? I'm not a hat person - I think I look silly in them. I thought about a bandana or something but I really need the "wide brimmed" aspect to shade the face.

Wishing I was back in prairie days where it was a given and not some oddball thing I have to do now!

Share your hat expertise with me, ladies!

SO funny you ask this Amy, I've been thinking hats myself lately. I hate hats. I wore a hat once in highschool the day I met the mother of someone I was dating. She said I looked like a little boy. I haven't wore one since. (and I didn't date that guy long either! LOL!) But I've had some real funky mole things going on, along with pregnancy mask. I look forward to the responses.

May I interject a question of my own? I have short hair - what about hat head?

I wear hats.. especially in the summer.. and I used to hate hats but I have found I'm so much cooler with a good hat.. I don't like the really wide sun hats.. but the ones with about a 3 inch brim around them.. and a looser weave.. you want air flow! That's what makes the difference for me.. hats used to make me so very hot because they held heat to my head.. getting a good hat with good airflow let's me be protected from the sun without losing the air keeping me cool.

Let me see if I can find you some pictures.

here's a site that has lots of styles.. I found that the most helpful.. doing a websearch for hats and looking at all the styles of hats helped me find something I liked.. walking into walmart or target and seeing all 2 or 3 styles of hats they have was frustrating.

Then I could either hunt for a cheaper place to get a hat new or.. ebay is a good place to look.

http://www.villagehatshop.com/vhs_womens_straw.html

I rather like the boaters and the gamblers.. they have a wider brim without being huge and floppy.

Oh.. one other thing.. wear the hat down on your forehead.. I found this annoying at first but
1) it gives better shade to your face and
2) it keeps you from looking like pollyanna

I'm glad you asked this question. I've always loved hats, but I haven't found one that looks good on me :( ... maybe some pointers from hat wearers here? I'm pretty short, and my face is round... also, when my hair is long I usually have it up in a ponytail or with a clip, so a hat has to accommodate that.... anyone here with long hair who wears a hat? What do you do with the hair?

I did find lots of pics

just pony or clip your hair at the base of your neck and most hats will work over that. I usually have mine braided and they work just fine.

Another thought is to pull your hair up high enough to get out of the way of the inside rim of the hat (the part that touches your head) and just tuck the tail up into the hat.

There are some good links from this thread from last year:
Do you wear a sun hat?

Good tips, Jodie....thanks!

I have long hair, and I usually do a single braid down the back and then wear a hat.    The problem is I look absolutely stupid without the hat on with a single braid, so if i want to take the hat off...I have to fix my hair again.

I have a small head, so sometimes I'm able to roll my hair up and get it all in the hat.

Lisa, when I had short hair......I carried a gel/mousse, or something that I could rub in my hair to give it a messy/tousled look after I took the hat off. Messy/tousled was better than hat-hair.

I love to wear a wide-brimmed straw hat! I have several, they don't give me a hat-head!

***ETA I wear something like this:
Straw Hat but I gently turn down the brim.

I was about to post that thread, too, Suzanne. Some really good information there.

Just decide that you're going to wear hats, Amy. They are now in vogue, and safety for your skin is of prime importance. Vanity comes second.

It used to be all women wore hats. We're just not used to seeing them on. You'll get used to it, and you'll enjoy the shade. I basically wore a hat all summer long -- anytime I was outside. My dh had the cancer on his nose and wears his Tilley hat religiously for yard work, and baseball caps all the rest of the time.

I really haven't seen anyone look bad in the broad brimmed hats. They are feminine and look nice.

Y'all should move to Seattle where everyone is basically allergic to the sun and cover all the time!    Plus, everyone in Seattle always has bad hair....and not just because of hats.

This is the one I want. I haven't worn a sun hat in years, but it is time to return to it.

That's a great one, Molly.....I honestly don't think anyone could look silly in that hat.

Oh, that reminds me. One thing I have discovered is I don't like the floppy brims. I had a straw hat that would just flop over. Then my fabric hat started drooping, too. There's one thing about keeping the sun out of the eyes, but to replace the sun with a hat is another thing.

I say go for a pith helmet.

Seriously, I love that Josephine Boater hat . . . I really need to make myself wear a summer hat, too.

Funny. I read that before looking at the hat website and thought--what?

You all are encouraging me to break out my straw hat. I live in the middle of a city and always feel like I should look more chic when I'm out so I get sunglasses. I can't really afford to keep my sunglasses in working order during my childbearing years, though, so I think I should invest a bit in the packable/crushable hat area. I finally found a great bucket hat for winter and I've gotten really attached to the sun-shading feature.

I too need a hat for my scalp and skin - I was pleased to find a wide brim in Target at a reasonable price - I got a black one (you can check it out on my blog) - I like it as it can be adjusted to fit different sizes of head and does not blow off. (today was my trial) - I am very sensitive and it did not irritate me - except for one little bit sticking out in the top which I will tape over. Target also had them in white and khaki/straw colors
