I never in my life dreamed I'd be asking about this, but we are considering renting a home in a gated community.
We have always lived in very small (10,000 or less) towns, usually in the country near town. Since moving east a year ago, we have lived in a developement that is, in itself, ok, but all around us it's pretty iffy. I don't feel safe at night (dh is gone a lot) and we worry a lot about our kids playing outside. Twice we've come home to find flyers on our door. One was from the sherrif looking for a suspect in a murder of an 11 yo girl (at home, in the daylight). The other was about forming a neighborhood watch because of strangers being in the area and knocking on doors at all hours.

The gated community would have the safety of the gate, of course, but also has a lake, and several playgrounds, along with sidewalks, neighborhoods, and more space between us and the neighbors. Of course, the cost is higher, too. What do you think? Does anyone live in one, and what are your opinions?
