My son recieved some birthday money and wants to buy an ipod.
We are pretty ipod-illiterate here. He doesn't have much sense for which one, neither do I!
He mostly wants it for listening to music and downloading books on tape- not really interested in the movie category (or at least his mom isn't).
I was looking at the shuffle, as it seemed a good starter and not quite so much of an investment if he happens to misplace it (although it is still expensive enough).
Any suggestions...

Kristie,
I just asked about this myself, I was told the Shuffle does just that it "shuffles" your music so you are not sure what song will come up. So if he wants to download or copy books onto it he should get a Nano. The Shuffle would ramdomly play chapers. My two oldest bought themselves Ipods. They are not allowed to download movies but they have a few movie trailers on their Ipods.
We did lose one Ipod, we think it accidently went into the Goodwill bag .

Yes, I remember just seeing that thread.
But when I looked on the ipod site at the 'shuffles' they acutually don't just shuffle. You can play them in the order you arranged the music or use the shuffle option.

Bumping this up again
We looked at the ipod 'nano' today and that looked like a good fit.
Is it easy to download books onto ipods?

I have an ipod (with video capabilities) and my oldest daughter has a nano. We really like them better than the shuffle because you don't have as many choices for formatting playlists and albums. We use them for music, books, and I have "Lost" episodes and some family movies and pics on mine!
We have an adaptor so we can plug the ipods into the car and use the radio to play our stuff. I even made a playlist of "Sunday" music to listen to on the drive to mass... chant, praise music, etc.
My 13 year old wants a nano as well, so he can keep all his favorite movie themes (Narnia, LOTR, Pirates) in his ears ALL the time! :-)
My vote is for the nano over the shuffle. Having the display to organize your music is much more useful than the interface the shuffle has.

I have a Nano and my two oldest have Shuffles. Hands down, we like the Nano better. The Shuffle is fine for listening to music, and ds listens to books on his, but not having the display to see what you're putting on is a big downfall of the Shuffle.
One thing about the Shuffle that I must praise: My dd left hers in her jeans pocket, and I didn't detect it (they really are tiny), and it went through the washer and dryer. I thought it was history, but I charged it up and it still works perfectly! I guess they are made pretty well :)

Thank you folks so much for the info. My ds ended up buying the 'nano' today(he was biting at the bit with all that birthday cash).
I bid on a case for it on ebay and only paid $6 with shipping, so he will be thrilled when I tell him (they were $30 plus tax here in the city).
Have a great weekend...

So if you have an Ipod, can you only use Itunes?

No. Around here dh loaded all his favorite CD's and some movies onto his Ipod. The kids also put books on CD onto their Ipods.

We are also putting on the things Mary Chris mentioned, but we are still doing it through the medium of Itunes- we are however newbies to all this
