Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend's son has tics that are apparently at least partially triggered by video games. His boy is 6 or 7 I think.

1. Do you know anything about this phenomenon? Are there any books/websites you could recommend that my friend read/visit? Any scientific data you could point me to that might help? I've found mostly anecdotal evidence on the web -- my friend has had his son cut down on videogame playing, but I'm wondering if maybe completely taking the videogame away might produce even more dramatic results, i.e., eliminate the need for medication (the child is under medication right now, and my friend is worried about long-term effects on the liver).

2. Is there anyone here whose child has experienced this? What did you do?

3. Is there anyone here whose child has diet-related tics?

Thanks for your help.

Stef-

I've often wondered about the warnings that I see on many video games -- that they can even cause seizures. There certainly must be precedent and the manufacturers want to cover their tails in case of lawsuits. I had not heard of anyone who had actually suffered from related problems... except for a close adult friend who cannot play certain first-person games because he experiences symptoms of vertigo.

Sorry that my post is not really helpful.

My first instinct would be to cut out the games altogether for a while, just to see how he behaves.

My son has ADHD and the tics that go with it- he is definately affected by video games. We have found that for him in particular, he is fine with very limited amounts of gaming, but of course it can be different for each child.

And yes, he is affected by diet as well. He cannot have any chemicals in his food- no artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, MSG, etc.

Thanks for the info, Tim and Lori. He asked if I knew anything about it and since we don't have video games at home (except for a second-hand from the kids' uncle that rarely gets used) I had no idea. Yikes!

Rarely, I think you can have a seizure. But the one I knew about the person had stayed up all night playing. Hope our kids aren't doing that!

My son's neuro says that sleep deprivation in and of itself can trigger seizures.

I know that some peoples' seizures are triggered by flashing lights.   My father wrote about that in his journal from his medical school days.
