Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are there any blenders or food processors or coffee grinders that would do the job? I hate buying a single purpose appliance if I don't have to!

yeah.. I think the vitamix can.. but I'm not sure on how much at once it can do.

That's what decided me on the single purpose.. how much would I need to keep the machine running.. and I'd heard a lot about taxing motors on other machines with doing a lot of grain.. so you'd be replacing multipurpose machines much more frequently (even if that's not always true.. at the time I bought it was the info I was finding)

Pam,
The Vitamix can grind, but you'll find that you have to grind 2 batches of berries to get enough wheat flour to bake one 2 lb loaf. Keep that in mind. It is nice that it does double duty. My mom has the vitamix and grinds her wheat nicely this way!

I use the Whisper Mill (which is no longer in business or I'd link) which is similar to the Nutrimill which is what I'd buy if my Whisper Mill ever bit it.

They were both around $200 which is quite an investment of money. My advice would be to decide how much you'll be baking. You might just want to try baking with whole wheat flour from the store for a while - see how it goes, how does your family like it? I bake every 2 days, and we bake our own bread exclusively, so for our family it was a worthwhile investment, both in nutrition and taste - both of which are superior with freshly ground wheat berries.

The smaller appliances would not stand up to the "daily grind" and in the end I fear you would be wasting your money. The only dual purpose machine I know of would be the Vitamix you mentioned.

Oh, one more thing, with a grinder you can grind your berries into pastry flour - a finer flour. I found this to be valuable during the *conversion* process with my family.    It yielded a lighter loaf. I haven't found anything else yet that grinds finer than a grinder - mom's Vitamix doesn't even get quite that fine, but close.
