Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i sometimes get discouraged reading other hs moms blogs because it seems like you have to be a morning person to be a good homeschooling mom. as much as i would like to be a morning person, my clock just does not run that way. at 10:30 at night i am ready to go and do a thousand things and i am always dragging myself out of bed in the morning.   am i the only one? my kids are both larks- up and singing and on the go before 7, so i dont sleep in that late, but it takes me a good hour before i feel anything close to alert. is there any hope for me?

Right there with you - hoot, hoot (need owl emoticon!). I hope I am a good homeschooling mother despite my late night leanings and early morning dread. I am so glad I don't have early morning children - genetically or by virtue of environment they are more like me. I don't know if it is good or bad but it is our reality.

I KNEW you'd post, Mary M! Maybe that's why Joe LOVES owls so much?

And I'm sure, Monica, you're a great homeschooling mom -- I KNOW MaryM is even if we're not quite on the same page sleepwise -- altho since we got the puppy, I'm both a night owl and a chirping morning hen. My kids are both -- some early risers, some late night folks. God gives us what we can handle -- and gives our kids the perfect moms for each and every one of them (even if the kids don't always agree with that ).

Oh Monica, never fear. The late hour at which we usually really get moving in this house in the mornings is my dirty little secret.

Same here....kids still in pajamas right now, me on the computer (it is 9:18 here).

I also come alive when the kids are in bed. And now they are up so much later

I would love it if we were all up early and finished our studies mostly in the morning hours and I complain about this frequently (my dirty little secret ). But the reality is that none of us are too perky in the morning.

I don't think you need to be a morning person to be a good homeschooling Mom. You can make your schedule however you like. I wrote a post last year about wanting to be a morning lark.   In September, I really started doing it - going to bed earlier and getting up at 6:00 am. I've been sticking to the get up earlier, but sometimes I stay up late (like last night ) so I'm dragging. I feel so much better when I go to bed early (by 10:00 pm).     This article that I linked to on my blog helped motivate me.

I'm a night owl too. People look at us strangely because of that but it works for us.

I hardly ever schedule anything before 10 AM.

We get a lot done around here but it's all in the afternoon.

Oh, me too. My homeschool group always schedules activities for either 10am - or earlier(!!!) We rarely make it .

And here I thought it was just me! I have often felt like you do - can I be a good homeschooling mom on this schedule? But look - there are lots of us night owls (whew!)

Oh my no... just because morning people get everything done and then have the rest of the day.. well

us other's just have some of the morning then get the work done and then have the rest of the day.. Why not if we "like" (need!) part of the morning as our "free time"

That's one of the beauties of homeschooling imo.. that we set our own schedule. I have a hard enough time dealing with my dh's work schedule (or lack there of) that I definately do NOT need someone else's schedule adding more conflicts to my day.

I am not really a night owl, nor am I an early bird. I find that I start functioning best around 10:00. My older daughter would be a night owl if I let her (she tries to convince me that she's nocturnal), but she's usually asleep by ten or 10:30. I usually go to bed at eleven, and wake up with the younger one. She used to get up around 8:00, which I didn't like but could handle. Since we eliminated her nap, she goes to sleep at ten and wakes up around 9.

We rarely have any early morning appointments because my husband leaves for work at nine with the car. And homeschooling group doesn't schedule anything before 10:30 because some of the members are radical unschoolers and don't roll out of bed until ten or eleven in the morning.

I sometimes tell me people that the real reason I choose to homeschool is so that I don't have to get up early.

I am a night owl, definitely! Although my goal is o get to bed before midnight, I rarely make it there before 1 am.
I find myself starting projects like de-cluttering and such around 10 pm and finishing around 12. Those are my "prime-time" hours. Of course I drag butt in the am,drinking lots of coffe and vegging out for awhile, but once I get going (around 9 or 10-ish) think we get a lot accomplished. Just not all before lunch, kwim? We are not afraid to school until supper if need be, but that rarely happens.
The 4 and 6 yo's get up around 7 and read or do puzzles or color quietly until the little one wakes up (around 8am), which is when I get up. He and Superboy are night owls, too, just like me.
