Off topic. Not sure where to place this.

Does anyone recommend satellite tv over cable?

I do.

Technically, I would prefer cable, but we only have one option for cable here and I have had more than one "bad experience" with this company and finally switched away from them for good last year.

Our service has been pretty good with satellite so far (we have had Dish Network for about 4 months), and I have more options for sports programming (in case that is a factor for you). Occasionally, the video will be "stuttery" while the audio is normal, but it will go back to normal after a short time.

I think your decision should boil down to which provider offers you the most channels that you want. Number of HD channels offered is becoming the hot selling point lately, and I think cable generally lags behind in this area. Both of the major satellite providers (Dish and DirecTV) usually have great "new customer" deals (free HD for 6 months or free receiver upgrades), but watch out for the expiration of the freebies -- either know what to expect on your bill when the promo expires or be mindful to cancel the "extras" when the time comes.

Do a little research into your local cable provider(s) and find out whether or not people are complaining about the service. If not, then you're best bet is to choose based on features -- noting that you are less likely to experience hardware or service issues with cable.

Hope that helps a bit.

I'm not really sure of the difference between cable and satellite.. but I would want one that does the DVR.. recording shows for you.. that you can then start watching even while it's recording elsewhere.. it would allow you to skip over the commercials.. which are often the most objectional part of many shows.

We are huge Dish network fans and love our DVR. We can record programs to watch when we're ready. We thought you could skip commercials and watch other programs while recording - as it is advertised. This is not the case.

We can pause the start of a program and then skip commercials while watching, eventually becoming live as it is being broadcast. We can record but can not watch something else while recording. Other providers or technologies may allow these. Dish does not.

We also love the on-screen guide and the blocking options.

We have Comcast digital cable with a DVR. There are two different tuners, so you can record on one channel while watching something on another or a recording. If two things are recording, you can start one of them from the beginning. It also automatically records the first twenty minutes of whatever channel you put it on, but it only saves it if you hit the record button.

The technology is still a little buggy, though (delays with remote, sound not working when first turned on until an action is performed). Every so often we have to call the cable company to have them reset the system, and we've had to have the entire box replaced three times (at no charge) in the past year and a half. Just FYI.

Hate cable, love satellite TV. We have DirecTV, have for about 5 years. Rarely have problems...stayed connected even through Hurricane Isabella, with very high winds.

We have the DVR and love that tool.

I'm w/Jenn...we have had DirecTV for a couple of years and have no complaints. We had Dish Network prior to moving and the customer service was rotten compared to DirecTV.

Our main reason for switching to satellite TV in the first place was to have EWTN 24/7. The local cable station had one channel for programming between EWTN and TBN (an Evangelical station). Now, of course, we have EWTN all the time, plus a whole host of sports programming options!

We love satellite. I particularly love the way I can set up a theme of channels that are as safe as possible for the kids. When we turn on the tv, we choose from those channels, blocking all the rest of the junk!

Still no solution to the awful commercial issue! We don't have the DVR.
