Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For my 40th birthday next week (gulp... I can say it..) we are planning to go to visit this shrine - weather and health permitting. Any views from anyone who has been here. Also I would be happy to take your prayer intentions if we go.

Blessed Birthday, in advance!

I think you're probably in for good weather in Emmitsburg much of this week. You can check weather.com for the 21727 zip code though to check.

The schedule of services is here: http://www.msmary.edu/grotto/schedule.html.

Wednesday is the one day the chaplain won't likely be there, as it has long been his day off -- since well before his days at the grotto (we've been friends for more than 10 yrs.). But, there's still Mass that day.

It does close pretty early during the fall and winter months. The current hours listed are 7:00 am - 5:30 pm.

Depending on how you want to spend your day, you could swing by for a visit and tie in Mass. You could picnic on the grounds (no pets allowed though), or you could eat locally. There are a couple Pizza Huts near by and other places too, some are nicer restaurants, and every so often a fast food place like McD's.

As far as eating on the grounds, there is a large grassy area below the restrooms, steep decline--you feel it more walking back *up* the hill though. There are some benches, or you could bring a blanket.

The grotto is undergoing some changes, as a visitor center will be added in the future. They added a trailer to the site last year. It's not the prettiest thing, but it serves in the meantime, whereas there was no office at the grotto itself previously.

There is a Rosary walk, which now includes the luminous mysteries, a Stations of the Cross walk, and many other nooks to see and pray at. Some people bring empty water jugs to bring home water (there is a font with running water).

Lastly (I need to get off the computer!!), you can "see" the grotto from Rt 15, as there is very large golden statue of our Lady. If you're coming from the south, it'll be on your left.

Enjoy your visit and your birthday!

Oh, I was just thinking about Emmitsburg. If you have the time and energy, National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton is just down the road and is so lovely. There are some archives on what to do and visit when up there. Have a wonderful time.

We went to both in 2003 when we were still in PA. It's so lovely there!!! Esp. that beautiful golden statue that you can see from afar, Mary watching over us and keeping us safe on our drive.

Advanced happy birthday and enjoy!!

Thanks everyone for the information. We are really hoping to go - hope this 70 degree weather continues.
There was a visiting seminarian from Mount St Mary's at church yesterday and he gave us some information too and invited us to the seminary - which we may try to do as my Nicholas wants to become a priest. He also told us about the Mother Seton basilica which I had not known about.

Thanks Kelly for all the useful information. We would have to eat up there so I have to figure things out.
