Do you or don't you? My boys have so many Legos, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and some Cowboy sets a friend gave us when her boys out grew them. I moved the Legos into the guest room, well now it is called the Lego room. The boys made a sign that says Lego Room on one side and Guest Room on the other. If only it were as easy as just turning the sign to clean them up.
The method of organizatin the boys like.....well they dumped them all over the floor. "The best thing about this is when you are looking for a Lego you always find some piece that is better than what you were actually looking for," I was told. 
So yesterday I collected some boxes and started sorting them by color. I forgot to mention we have guests coming and the room needs to be picked up. Even when I am not worried about guests, the closet I use to store craft and school supplies is in that room, I feel my life, at least my feet, are at risk everytime I walk through the room. The boys suggested just turning over the rug  , I wish.
Anyway, I started by color but now I think size might be a better way to sort. I tried big low sided boxes for a while but still that requires so much digging. Years ago I bought this Box4Blox but it didn't quite work for them. I think they were to young to appreciate it. Maybe if I use that and still sort them by color.
So this is one of my projects in my quest for simplicity and I need help and ideas to tame the Lego Monster. Any takers?

My son keeps them in Rubbermaid buckets by kit type (Star Wars, etc.). They all go under his bed. He doesn't like sorting them by color because it makes it harder for him to rebuild the TIE fighters, etc. I have no preference as long as I don't have to step on the Lego pieces in my bare feet.
(A Lego room, how cool! At least you have a place for their giant construction projects!)

You're a brave woman! I try to stay off the Lego battlefield! My 15 y.o. son takes very good care of his Legos and has devised a way to keep them fairly well organized. I'll ask him when he gets up exactly what he does, although I'm not sure it will be along the same line of organization you might have in mind.
I'd just like to say that I think they learn some good skills having to pick through the pile to find just the piece they're looking for. It seems boys, especially, need a little extra help learning to pay attention to details and I think "lego-sifting" is a good start.
I'll check back in after I talk to my son!

We use two sets of those plastc drawers. Plain classic legos are organized by color in one and the other has a drawer for each set type.

I used to worry about organizing them. Now I just tell them if I see them on the floor they are vacuum chow. Magically my problems have disappeared!(one way or another!LOL!)

My opinion too... although the words differ 
DS has a couple of boxes for them... he is supposed to keep them on the playmat when messing with them so the path is clear and I don't get hurt!

We have a Lego space in the basement. Pieces are stored in the long skinny, under the bed, sweater boxes. The boys said that was the easiest way to be able to look for them. There are a couple shelves for on going projects, and a few completed creations are hanging from the ceiling.
Our biggest chalenge is the 3 year boy, who desperately wants to be big.
Legos located outside of the Lego area are sucked up by the shop vac. (the same goes for Polly Pocket bits!)

We have stored Legos many different ways. Lately ds has been using a long narrow tupperware but it is hard to take when we travel and Legos go everywhere with us!!
So, now he is using a large tackle box. It has large compartments at the top and then individual plastic drawers. He is in the process of sorting by color. The only thing is.........he will definitely need more. But they will fit more easily into the car when we travel.

A friend of a friend had a great idea-- she took a big, round piece of fabric and put grommets around the outside of the circle, and laced it with rope/string. All legos are played with on that ring. When you are finished, pull the string and viola-- the legos are in the bag.

My dh's grandma did this for him! He still has this bag, with his old Legos in it!

Well, legos are a real problem around here, especially after last year when we inherited 2 large duffel bags full of them. It was too much, and we ended up giving away most of them. What we are going to do now, each time we get a new set, has been recomended to me by my sister, who's oldest (now 19) was a huge lego fan. She stored each set in a large ziplock back, with the instructions. Then, the set could be built again, as all the parts will be there.
We also have 2 med. sized bins filled with random legos, so the kids can build their own creations also.

Well all the Legos are picked up and sorted by color at the present time. Well except for the two they just finished building here in the family room. My hands and knees show the proof with all the Lego indentation marks on them.
I like the idea of the cloth with the grommets but I think we have to many Legos to make it work.
A lot of the directions ended up in the trash. Now I have a binder with page protectors for them to put the directions into when they finish building.
As much as my guys kinda grumbled when I started the project my 10ds did thank me a few times.
I know this plan of organizing by color isn't the for always answer but it works for now.
