Finally, our sweet baby has arrived! A big, strapping fellow at 9lbs 10 oz, 21 inches long, he is every bit as wonderful as we anticipated! He was born at 12:56 am on December 19.
Here is a quick run-down of the events of the night he was born. I had gone in for my check knowing that at 41+ weeks, the doctor would want to talk induction. I was seeing a doctor I hadn't seen before because, much to my surprise, my midwife was on vacation. When I got there, they checked my amniotic fluid level and determined it to be below the minimum. So the doctor told me to go home, get everything settled and come to the hospital that evening.
By the time Court got home, and then took Big B to his basketball game, it was almost 9pm. We got the kids settled and left for the hospital, stopping at Subway to get Court's dinner and my "after delivery" snack. At this point, I had been contracting on my own for a few hours and it looked like I was going to deliver that night even without any intervention.
After we were all checked in at the hospital, the doctor broke my water. This was maybe about 10 pm. Things started rolling from there. The memories of those 7 other labors were suddenly coming back to me! Things were intense and right before midnight I really started feeling like I needed to push. The nurse checked me, said I was at 9cm and paged the doctor. In my head, I actually was thinking this wasn't too bad. There was a reason I thought that. I wasn't done! As they were getting everything ready for me to push, the doctor came in, checked me and said I was only at 7cm and it wasn't time yet.
At this point I cried and, despite my dreams of the perfect "natural" birth, asked for an epidural. Court tried to convince me that I was almost done, but I wouldn't hear it. By the time they got the epidural in, with me sitting up on the bed through several incredible contractions, and gave me a couple of test doses, the baby had decided it was time. In fact, it was all I could do to not push him out before the doctor made it in. So much for my epidural. LOL! But my first couple of postpartum hours were very comfortable. (Note for next time, just get in position to have epidural inserted and baby will come!)
He came out fast, but all wrapped up in the cord. He was pretty bruised, but other than that, just perfect!
The kids are just loving him, as am I. God has been so good to us. What an incredible Christmas gift!
I am still not figuring out how to post a picture here, but check out my blog and the photo album "Welcome George". Three days old and the kid already has an alias!
