I'd really like to get a pair of nice, but practical boots to wear with long skirts in the winter. They don't need to be heavy-duty snow storm boots. I've got some of those, but I would like to stay warm. Problem is I have somewhat, shall we say, shapely calves . . . Any suggestions for a brand/style that might fit me?

I just bought some boots from Zappo.com. They have customer reviews for all their shoes. That helped me choose my boots. I wasn't sure if they'd look good with a skirt until someone actually wrote "these look great with a skirt!", LOL. I ordered them yesterday afternoon and they'll be here today, plus they've got free return shipping if you don't like them.

Do you need / want them to be knee-high boots? Or would a shorter, riding boot suffice?

Just a hint about boots and long skirts - avoid styles with the decorative buckle on the sides! My skirt hems are forever getting caught on the buckles and ripping the stitiching out.

I'm thinking taller than a hiking boot, but maybe shorter than knee-high. Is there something in between? I wear pretty long skirts, but not all the way to my ankles, so it seems like a short boot would look silly . . .

There is a section on Zappos for Wide Calf Boots. Fitzwell seems to have some nice, practical-looking boots. I don't know anything about them, but there were at least 2 pair there that looked "normal."

Boots are expensive, but don't forget you'll have them a LONG time. I've had mine for almost 4 winters now and they still look almost brand new. Also, it took me FOREVER to find the "perfect boot" so don't give up!

Ankle boots will be less $$$. And, I think they look fine with skirts, even if the hem of the skirt doesn't cover the top of the boot. I have a black ankle boot that you can see in lots of these photos, if you know how to "scroll down" when enlarging a photo (I haven't figured that out yet). Or, there is a picture of them (the boots) at the bottom of this post. They are a Dansko paddock boot and GREAT, but they don't sell them anymore.

Check out the on-line Equestrian stores, or go to one if you have one in your area. The riding boots are usually not as expensive as the fashion boots and they are much better quality, as they are made for HARD WORK and dirt! Mine are very similar to these Ariats. Short ankle boots are called Paddock Boots. The tall ones are called "Riding Boots." They have all kinds on this website to give you an idea.

Here is a Naot Boot that is SO COMFORTABLE and Naots will last forever.....but there's that stupid buckle and they aren't cheap, either.

Here's one that would look great with skirts.....but the heel is a bit high (for me). You should be able to find these or something like it in dept. stores.

Eddie Bauer has a Tall Riding Boot that I remember trying. They look great, but do you see how that sole is so thin? i'd wear through that in a year, and you could FEEL what you were walking on. For $158, you can find a much more substantial boot than that.

Here is a Field Boot from LL Bean. Maybe a bit short for you?? But I think it'd look OK with skirts, depending on the type of skirts you're wearing.

Here is a Merrell boot that is gorgeous....but it's LINED . Not an inside, everyday boot. .

I like these. Kind of "heavier" looking, but would look really nice with winter skirts.

Don't be afraid to USE Zappos....meaning if you find 5 pair that you're interested in....order them. See which one you like....their return process is so easy and doesn't cost a penny.

I really like Lands End boots-they are warm and have many styles:
LE boots

I've been wearing a shorter boot with my long skirts recently and most of skirts hit the top the boot which is perfect for me. This would help alleviate your calf issue.
