Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As a child & young adult, I collected Madame Alexander dolls. In 1994, they were still made in the USA completely (in New York City), but I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are still made in the USA? I know the company was sold in the mid-90's and I wonder if they've moved production off-shore. I can't find anything with my limited internet search time right now.

I wanted to get Lydia a MA baby doll for Christmas, but we're trying to stick with made in the USA. I'll email the company, but just thought I'd check here in case someone knew.

thanks :)

Hi,

According to this article, it looks like they are actually made in China, also .

My family also used to collect Madame Alexander dolls. In fact, my sister has a whole closet-full of them. I know a German company bought Madame Alexander in the mid-90's and hiked the prices up even more than they were. (Then they wonder why nobody wants to buy them and starts making them in China.)

Of course, the whole collectible doll market has just collapsed from what I can tell. I don't know that any of my dolls would sell for a fraction of what my parents paid for them originally.

I actually have a MA baby doll. It was one of the large ones named Pussy Cat. I would sell it to you, but unfortunately, it is still sitting in my parent's basement in a another state. Most of my dolls have very little intrinsic or extrinsic value to me at this point, so I've seriously considered trying to get anything I could for them and help my parents de-clutter their house.

I think I have fonder memories of getting my MA dolls than actually owning them. We used to go to this little doll shop in Pigeon Forge, TN called Stella Mae's. Stella Mae was this sweet old lady who used to tell stories about all the people who used to ask her if Stella Mae Parton owned the shop. Sadly, the last few times we were there Stella Mae was getting very old and we had to help her get back into her store/house after accidentally locking herself out. The last time we went her son and daughter-in-law were in the process of closing the store, since Stella Mae couldn't handle it anymore. I'll never forget her, her beautiful and homey shop, and her generosity to my mother of a $100 baby doll for the arrival of her first grandbaby as a thank you for helping Stella Mae back in her house.

I know its China, we have some. They aren't as pretty as they once were.

Barbara, I think ebay and such has made it very easy to get things and has made collectibles' value crash.

Thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed it.

ps-

I should also note that with the whole lead recall thing that the MA dolls often come with little trinkets and painted buttons. I read that parents should be very careful about buying such items as it is nearly impossible to regulate lead content of those little items. One 4yo died after swallowing a little trinket that came with a pair of Reeboks. Its made me rethink MA.
