I was watching Dr. OZ on Discovery Health yesterday, and I really think that what he promotes is so make-sense in terms of acheiving overall good health. Basically, its eating real, whole foods, consistantly exercising, dealing appropriately with stress, not smoking or abusing alchohol...fairly simple one would think!

But I find that when I honestly assess my personal adherence to these simple principles, I really fall short, especially in the exercise department.(OK, I don't smoke or abuse alchohol!) But I don't walk 30 minutes a day, don't do aerobic exercise 3x per week, never lift weights. And while I do prepare mostly healthy fare for my family, I WAY too often skip meals while I run around the kitchen serving and cleaning up, only to overeat junky stuff (sugar, white carbs, etc.) later when I'm ravenously hungry.

I'm wondering, has anyone figured out how to make good health a priority within the demands of the homeschooling life? I'm honestly not sure how I can walk 30 minutes each day! I'd love to lose 20lbs, kick coffee, and have great energy. But I also wonder how I can fit one more thing into my day. How do you make it a priority??

Well, what I've tried to do is schedule it into the day ... after we cleanup from breakfast and started laundry, we go for a walk for 15-30 minutes and when we get back we do a "room" (clean, mop, dust, whatever) and then get ready to start school.....with everyone helping it all goes quickly -- even the walk as the littles are at the age where they think EVERYTHING is a race or competition ....

But I'm doing this for all of us to get our blood flowing and not worrying about "real" exercise ...

I could have written your post! I can visualize myself walking, eating healthy, and losing those 20lbs, I just can't do the work!

I decided recently that I don't have to walk first thing in the morning. I purchased 3 pairs of weekend pants so I can look neat but still go out for a walk later in the day. I know that is sort of silly but once I put on my jeans or a skirt and sweater I just won't do a power walk.

A friend once told me to think about adding in one healthy habit at a time instead of eliminating bad habits. Then hopefully the good habits will replace the bad habits. When I need a snack in the afternoon I try to have an apple and piece of cheese not a handful of crackers or M&Ms (though I often fail miserably ). I am also trying to have a good breakfast that will get me through to lunch. Something I have to work on is sitting down at the table (not computer) with my children for lunch.

When it comes down to it I think it is all about planning, another place I fail miserably , planning healthy meals with salad and veggies, planning exercise into your day and then that whole self discipline thing, did I mention I have a lot of self work to do .

I really like that one good habit idea! Like you others, I KNOW what I need to do, but my real life seems to be different from the lives of those actresses who work with their personal trainers a couple of hours each day and have their chefs prepare appealing low-calorie meals. I wonder why?

I love having a pedometer. My Weight Watches one lets me know how many WW points I've earned so I know how much extra I could eat if I want (usually the equivalent of 1 cookie). Without leaving the house I walk about 3 miles a day, and with the pedometer on you can see if you are walking enough or slacking. Sometimes I do a yoga dvd at home, but 7 of us to one mat is too much.    I recently bought a pool pass so I can lap swim on Sat and Sun. That gets 2 days done and then if I can slip in one extra day, that's pretty good!

I'm approaching fitness as a seasonal thing! I have bad hip/pelvic pain & nausea when I'm pregnant, so there are 9 months where I basically can't exercise. So when baby is a few months old and before the next pregnancy begins, I devote way more time to exercise than at other "seasons" of my life.

There's a 90-day workout program I love called P90X (you can google it) - it is quite intense and I haven't done the whole thing, but it DID get me into much, much better shape after my last pregnacy - back into my "regular" clothes and down to my ideal weight. Now I just do the work-outs periodically, and if/when we have another pregnancy, I know I'll "backslide" as far as fitness is concerned & just focus on nutrition.

P90X is a set of 12 DVD's - you do the workouts in your own home, which is what I need, and my boys can do it with me in their own cute way.

I still have not got back to the good habits after angel baby's birth. But exercise wise - I do try and take a walk with the kids every day. Also - a couple of years ago the "rebounder" was recommended to me as a safe and healthy exercise - I got mine as a gift and I am starting back today - and going to do 50 sit ups for the soft belly. You only need to do 10 minutes on the rebounder - it is great for joints and not painful - apparently 10 minutes jogging on the rebounder is the same as 30 minutes on ground. It is supposed to be like having a whole body facial! The problem is that if I have 10 minutes spare I prefer to sit down with a book and good cuppa tea

Re eating - I do not have weight issues - but I do have health/allergy /chronic issues - so we try to eat healthier. My view has been to introduce it slowly and also have some outlet for "fun eating" (today's teatime was gooey chocolate chip cookies and maple syrup popcorn!! )I always do a really good breakfast - high protein which starts the day off well. I just have to find a way to get us all to eat more raw vegetables and salads and more fruit.

Sleep is supposed to be the best anti-inflammatory and way to escape illness - and that is one thing I am doing well at.

Stress management is the other best thing - and I am really not good at that. I am trying to take 10 minutes a day to deep breathe and bust stress.
