My husband and I are contemplating a move to Houston. He would keep his current job but just transfer to Houston. We've lived in TX before (Dallas and Austin areas) and loved them but I'm a little concerned about the size of Houston! His salary would be significantly increased and the cost of living has got to be one of the lowest in the country. It's pretty crazy that his job would pay him more in Houston than DC, but that's the government for you. Financially, it would be a great decision but I'm concerned about the crime and size.
If anyone who lives or has lived there could give me some first hand knowledge it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and I've driven through a few times and have visited once during my working days and the area I was in was nice (Galleria) but this would be a long term commitment and that makes me nervous.
Thank you!

Hi Bethany,
I asked this question last year for friends who were moving there. They are actually in town visiting this week. I can ask them all of your questions. If you'd like to speak with them directly, you can pm me your email or phone number or I can give you theirs.
God bless!

I lived there for 5 years--moved 2 years ago. It's a great homeschooling environment. I still miss it!
Can't add more now as baby is nursing. PM me if you'd like...

I just moved from Colorado from Houston in August. I grew up in Dallas/Fort Worth, went to school in Austin, and then moved to Houston when my husband and I got married. I really liked it there and there are a lot of places that are safe and don't feel so big city-ish. Do you have any idea where in Houston he would be working? I could give you a better idea based on that.
I was sad to leave Texas, and I enjoyed living in the Houston area!

We lived in a Houston suburb called Sugarland which we really, really liked. My dh commuted to near the football stadium and it wasn't too bad. If it wasn't in TX, I would move back to Sugarland again in a heartbeat. Everything we could want - great supermarkets, great mall, Michael's craft store, great restaurants, good hospitals - were within 5- 10 minutes of us. It's a consumer's dream.

We lived an hour South of Houston in Lake Jackson, in '98. If not for a new job we would have stayed (we had already bought a house, but stayed there only 10 months). Loved the weather, the people, our church, everything. And loved that real estate was so affordable! (well, at the time it was still a stretch for us, but boy did we get sticker shock moving North). I probably wouldn't choose to live in Houston itself though -- I remember the traffic being REALLY bad, headache-inducing, those few times we were in Houston during rush hour. Yikes. But then that's true of a lot of big cities, anyway, and certainly is true where we are now.
We still miss it:( -- esp. the zoo, the children's museum, the weather!, etc.
No idea about crime rates now, but it was relatively peaceful back in '98, when we moved there from St. Louis.
