Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Being the procrastinator that I am.....does anyone have any nifty ideas of something simple my homeschool group (smallish) could do that was Service oriented? Our 40 Days for Life folks don't need anything....we're collecting baby and Maternity items for our local Crisis Pregnancy center.....

I thought we'd make some rosaries and have the littlies keep track of how many they said. Our Diocese does "Rosaries for Life" in Oct. This seems so uninspiring? Anyone have any ideas that are stellar and easy to implement?

Kathleen

Off the top of my head, all I can think of are volunteering at a local food pantry/kitchen, making care packages for soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan, or visiting nursing homes. (The town that I grew up in had one fancy nursing home and several low income ones. Almost everyone visited the fancy one because they liked it better. My mother always took us to the smaller, poorer, less fancy ones because no one else ever went there. We sang songs and just talked to the people and they loved it.)

If you have a SPCA, and if they accept pet food donations, you could collect food for the animals. You could clean up a vacant lot, or your church's property.

I was going to say that lots of animal shelters need old blankets and rags, and most have a wish list.

My homeschooling group did a project where they made blankets out of wool fleece. I think they took two equally large pieces of the fleece and cut strips about one-inch wide and three-inches long around all four sides and then tied the strips together tightly. Then they were handed out to patients in nursing homes. It kind of was like a practical gift with a personal touch. This would probably work well for homeless shelters, too.

Toys for Tots is always looking for donations, too. That can be fun and sobering as the kids go to buy new toys but then have to give them away.

I'm not sure how chilly it gets in your neck of the woods but how about a coat drive for St. Martins Feast Day.

My dd Challenge group collected stuffed animals to send to Iraq last year. I have read that there are servicemen in the Middle East that take donations of soccer balls to hand out to the children they meet.

We are doing a coat drive for Martinmas! I am so excited about it. We also plan on making blankets (mostly no sew fleece blankets) for Project Linus.

This might be a bit too complicated...but kids love to do this. We have in the past (with our 4H group and other groups) gotten plain white cake boxes (from the grocery store). We buy cake mix, frosting, candles and balloons. Then we ask each child to bring a small gift for the box, that a boy or girl of any young elementary age (like bubbles, crayons, markers, etc) would like. Then during our group time, the kids decorate the boxes and make a generic "Happy Birthday" card. It's a "Birthday in a Box".

We have given these boxes to the domestic abuse shelter in town and also to the House of Mercy...an amazing ministry where the poor come for clothing at no cost.

I love these ideas! I want to print this thread for future Little Flower project ideas.

Another idea: Food bags for homeless children

All you need can be bought at Costco:

- gallon-sized plastic bags
- fill with juice box, granola bar, pre-packaged crackers and cookies, applesauce or fruit cup, spoon, napkin and a few stickers

Our group made up a bunch of these. You could even have each family bring a particular item. I happened to have a local connection with a woman who daily encountered homeless families usually arriving newly in town by bus and she was able to hand the children these bags.
