We looove to read out loud all of the time...especially when the books are WONDERFUL and we don't want to put them down. My question is...how do you help your tired out voice...tea? or something? Surely someone has a "home remedy" for soothing worn out vocal cords

well lemon and honey help a sore throat.. how about sipping on some lemonade (hot or cold)? You'll want something that won't gum up your voice.. but also something that will coat a bit.

I am definitely interested in this! I LOVE read-alouds as well, but it loses it's charm when I start to sound like a toad after a chapter or three. Hot tea seems to help some, but I could sure use some more ideas!

Also work on supporting your voice with your abdominal muscles.. like for singing.. less strain on your voice.

Donna Marie - I keep warm tea on the table where we read, and we read til the tea is gone (ok - sometimes we stretch it a little .) When my voice is going I warm a cup of water in microwave, add a big tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice. It is very soothing to the vocal chords.

Try licorice root and marshmallow root tea. Even just the licorice root by itself. Very yummy and wonderful for strained voices. Also - something that helps me when I remember to do it - is to talk, how shall I say it? In different tones or ranges? Vary the way you talk so it's not monotonous. That helps keep the strain off the vocal chords. It will also help with singing.
I don't know if this will help with the talking but what has helped me with singing is to imagine the air coming up past your vocal chords and hitting the roof of your mouth. I had strained my voice badly by forcing my chords to go too high, and I couldn't sing for 1 1/2 yrs. And doing this helped tremendously. I was able to sing without hurting my chords at all.(It's going on about that long since I've been able to seriously practice, too, since we've moved into our new house and I've been incredibly busy. I'd like to make a point of doing it regularly.)
Another thing that may help, is to bend over and hum or sing so you can get a feel for where the voice is supposed to be coming from. If you think about it coming from the front of your face as opposed from your chest and throat, that, too helps - at least with singing, but I find it helps even with talking, too. As long as I remember to do it!!
