My 7 yod who is rather gangly loves to wear dresses but needs thick tights/leggings to wear under them. Anyone know of a good, inexpensive source. Hanna has them for $20 but that seems a bit steep. I'd love to get her some patterned ones as well as solid .... Michele Q had posted about Hudson Baby, but they only go up to 4T and Maggie would be a 7 or 8.....

Old Navy sometimes has nice ones, and Target too -- they just don't fit as well as the Hannas. Oh, and Gymboree's are great too -- I usually try to get them from the clearance rack. Sometimes I luck out and get them for under $5. They're nice and thick.
whoops -- gymboree might only have them up to size 6.
i used to get lands' end too, but they don't hold up as well IMO as hanna's.

Second the gymboree. They have legless tights, too, and leggings, which my girls have found more comfortable (and warmer) than tights. They seem to go up to size ten (except for some of the sale items . But not bad even at regular price (well, compared with Hanna).

Mary,
Instead of tights my older girls like to do legging and knee highs. Basically because sometimes they don't like the feel of tights and so they can switch back and forth depending on how cold it is. I'm not fond of tights myself so I can't force it on them. The baby on the other hand has no choice but she doesn't seem to mind yet. . Anyway, we got these really cute knee highs from Land's End this year so they're pretty excited about wearing them. It's finally cool today so we're thinking about these things.
ETA: I usually sew my own leggings but I have heard they are easy to knit - have you done this?

I got some really cute ones at Target last year. Very colorful patterns and nice and thick. My dd wears a six, so I am not sure if they go larger or not, but I do think I remember that they did. They had a great selection of footless ones as well. I hope the selection is as great this year.

Michelle,
I am almost finished with a pair of baby leggings from EZ's Knitting Almanac, and the adult ones look so cozy that I may try a pair. They are an easy knit using percentages for size, and EZ says that they take only as much yarn as a sweater, so about the same knitting time. FWIW....

Gymboree is having their Circle of Friends sale starting Friday- 30% off everything. Might be a good time to go tight shopping!

Thanks y'all -- I checked Land's End and they were expensive and didn't look as good as Hanna's... I never thought to try Gymboree ... I'll look into that.
Knitting leggings is easy -- really just a ribbed tube. I hadn't even thought to do that! I have a pair of cabled leg warmers my dh's 2nd cousin made and they are so warm -- in wool they are virtually waterproof and thick enough for me to pull over my pants and stay dry and warm (even in the snow we got last winter!).
Thanks folks -- keep the suggestions coming please!

My DD loves dresses too and she often wears leggings. I get the cheap ones from target for about $5? These are great under dresses since they are good for play and don't get snagged.
She also wears knee highs and leg warmers a lot. She wears the leg warmers on her arms too and is quite the fashion statement

Our Land's End tights have lasted just as long as our Gymboree tights. Hanna's are the most expensive, I think. I've been happy with both.
Also, The Children's Place in the mall sells tights that have lasted well (we are handing down LE, Gymboree and Children's Place tights through 3 girls here) and can be extremely reasonably priced...when they run sales, they are really excellent.

Mary- be sure to get your order in first thing Friday- have your shopping cart ready to go. The Circle of Friends sale is a big one- some people even stay up until Midnight Thursday to get their orders in first. I've never done that, but some things do sell out quickly.

We have been happy with our Children's Place tights. They are on the second year and have held up well.

I thought the same thing so went ahead and ordered today the things that were already on sale-figured they'd be gone if I waited. But I'll be ready with my other stuff...I'm lucky since I'm on the west coast-only 9pm my time

Hana tights may be expensive but they have lasted and still look great after 3 girls.
As for knitting them, Mary I did this a couple of years ago.....very fun..... I made them thigh high using black alpaca!

Have you tried looking at ebay for the hanna tights? Since they wear so well you can get good ones used.
Also, the Old Navy ones.. (their new stock in tights comes out in early Oct so may not have any yet).. are reasonably good for the price. I usually get 2-3 winters out of a pair of them (passing down as appropriate so they all get several seasons of wear) and they go up to a girls 14-16 I believe.
My girls have stayed warm in them.. and we shift to fall/winter clothes in early Oct. and use them into April at least. And in Jan. the temps hover in the single digits.

I haven't tried Hannah's yet.
We like Old Navy and Gymboree Tights. StrideRite, too, has quality tights that are "pass down-able". I just bought several pairs of StrideRite tights from Marshall's for $5/pair.
I wasn't too happy with the quality of the Target tights. They seemed to thin out, and grow holes in the bum just before the tight-wearing season was over.

You get what you pay for, in the case of Hannas and Lands' End. They wear well. I'd pay the "extra" above the cheaper brands, to make sure they last thru the season.
Penny-wise and pound-foolish, as my grandma would say!
Peace,
