Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Okay, my oldest is homeschooling, and she's doing great. Only problem, she is ready for a playmate as soon as we're finished. Any ideas on how to keep her from being bored until other friends are finished with school? Right now this is the one place lacking when it comes to schooling... because she does not like to entertain herself. (I think these are the only times she wishes she was in school.)

Does she have chores? Maybe she can go around helping you with yours. Or if she is old enough, maybe she can get involved in a volunteer opportunity. Are you a part of a homeschooling group where she can occasionally get together with other kids who aren't in school?

However, she will need to learn to entertain herself on a regular basis. That's one of the most important lessons a child should learn. No child or adult can go around expecting to be entertained by others every minute. John Taylor Gatto discusses this brilliantly in an article he wrote at this link: http://www.spinninglobe.net/againstschool.htm
Check out the second paragraph and second to last paragraph.

I know that it's not always easy to make them entertain themselves. My older daughter has always demanded a lot   of attention and interaction and has a very low boredom threshold (a totally "spirited" child). Just try your best to keep unique materials handy that she can access. If she is younger, maybe you can separate her toys into three groups and rotate them on a weekly basis to change things up. You can also see about education computer games (from the library) and internet sites. Encourage her to read a book (if she can read) or work on jigsaw puzzles.

Good luck!!

Hi, Emily. I remember going through that a bit with my dd. We had just moved to the area from Houston when she turned 5. She was lost without her best friend that had lived right across the street.

I tried to provide lots of crafty/art type of activities for her in the afternoons. I think, also, that going to a weekly playdate (or like our homeschool p.e. group that has started meeting on Mon. mornings) helps. Even though I consider her my extrovert, she does still like to go to her room and start doing some craft on her own. I do think it's important that kids have down time alone in which they can create or entertain themselves.

My ds is not as much of a self-starter/entertainer as dd, but it's getting better. Maybe it comes with age.
