I'm thinking of getting a reel mower like this. DH gets behind on the mowing and gets discouraged. I was thinking that our 9 yo could possibly help a little (at least till dh can get to mowing with the gas mower) by using a reel mower.
However, I know NOTHING about this type of mower. Coming from this ignorant perspective, it seems like ds 'ought' to be able to push one of these mowers around to at least tide us over till the main mowing.
What do you think?

They are supposed to be quite good for your grass - something about the way they cut vs. the way a long bladed mower cuts. They're also economical and environmentally friendly.
That being said though - I remember the one my grandmother had and it was pretty tough to push.

We had one for awhile and I'm sorry to say it was awful! It was very hard to push and it made the grass look very choppy.

We have a wonderful one from Lee Valley Tools. It is easy to push, and any of my older ones can push it. It is adjustable in the length it cuts and does a great job (not to mention being very quiet).

I got one for my special needs son, age 12, so that he could help around the yard without using power tools. He's on the lazy side though, so my 10 year old dd uses it with no problem.

It really depends on your lawn. We have used one for a few years now. Our front yard, which has more clover and violets, is pretty easy, regardless of length. Our back yard has more crab grass, and it is hard to cut, especially when it gets very long and thick. Dh really gets a workout! (Which he likes!)

If you have a large yard, forget it!
If you have a normal sized one, then btwn you, your dh and your son you ought to be able to handle it. My ds 7 loves to push it around --its fun. And it IS a workout. (at least for me, I am a small woman.)
After researching we got the german made brand, Brill. Seemed to be one of the best on the market. The cutting quality really varies from brand to brand. Ours does a good job with regular grass, clover, even crab grass.
You may eventually want to get a weedwhacker too, if you have "problem areas."

We have one! Although we do have a small yard, it has worked great for 3years now! My 10 yr old can use it himself without any trouble and has for over a year now. What I love about these is we never have a lack of gasoline panic! With the gas mower it was always a worry if there was enough gas left to run it! My Dh says our grass is healthier since we switched to the reel mower from the gas powered one...I trust his judgement since I never really paid attention to the health of the grass before  and he did!

We have the one from Lee Valley as well, and it's fabulous! Hubby only cut the grass once this year (in the spring when it was a bit long), and the three kids still at home take turns (12yod, 9yos, 6yod). The youngest needs a bit of help, but the other two manage entirely on their own

We used one from Sears for 13 years when we lived in a townhouse. I think our plot of lawn was 30 x 30 and it was just perfect for the job.
