Has any one used a stone mill (hand-powered, like the one at the top)?

I got one recently from freecycle (I am a regular bread maker, and had often thought of trying to grind my own flour, so when this came up I was very pleased).

I've finally got hold of some wheat and had a quick go with just a little, but it didn't seem to do much—and I haven't been able to find instructions online. There's not many adjustable parts, but I'm not sure if there's something I'm not doing.

I wondered if any of you might have had some experience with one, and might be able to give me some pointers?

To answer my own question! (Lots of people looked at the initial post, even if they weren't able to shed any light... so I figure that there's some interest:-) )

I took it along to our playgroup today so that the kids could look at it, even if they couldn't have a go. I decided to try filling the centre, rather than just doing a little—and it worked!

So the answer is don't try a bit, do lots:-) Other than that, it was very easy to use (as in simple... it does require a certain _effort_!), and I'm looking forward to baking tomorrow with home ground flour:-)

I'm glad you were able to answer your own question ... I've been looking at getting one and this looks like a great one as it's non-electric and sounds safe for the kids ... now to find one reasonably here (freecycle would be nice

)

It certainly seems to be good for kids:-)

All the 3-4 year olds were really interested, and most had several goes at grinding (they lacked stamina:-) ), and the older kids were able to make a pretty decent effort—the 8 year old girl was _very_ happy to finish off all the wheat we'd put in:-)

Puggle hasn't stopped talking about it, and he's very keen that he'll continue helping me:-) We'll see how long that lasts, but he is at a very helpful age:-)
