Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have googled St. Hortense or St. Hortensia and can't find who she was. Where should I be looking?

Thanks!

Are you sure about this name? I just checked my copy of Butler's Lives of the Saints and I didn't see anything close to that name.

Susan

I was wondering the same thing as Susan. I had checked here. This listing is really comprehensive and includes variations on name spellings. The only Hortense that comes up was the stepmother of St. Germaine.

I have in Dictionary of Patron Saints' Names says there are three saints with this name, but they are all males. One St. Hortense embraced a martyr's death in ancient Alexandria, Egypt.

Feast Dates: May 19 -- St. Hortensius

But I can't find anything more on any of these saints in my books or online.

Thank you! I was called to visit a woman in our church who had a late miscarriage. She is from Cameroon, and I was told she took the name Hortense as an act of faith. I had in my mind that meant Hortense was a saint, and I thought it might help to break the ice/bridge the cultural gap if I knew something about this saint.

In the end, the shared experience bridged the gap for me. Thanks so much for the input! I appreciate you guys.
