Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, what happens if you get nearly a whole pack of gum that goes thru not just the wash, but the dryer too? Y'know, when the gum streaks the inside of the metal drum and you're sure little bits of orange chewing gum are going to show up on your clothes till you get a new one (which isn't in the cards as this is just barely a year old!)......

Soak a fabric softener sheet (or paper towel soaked in fabric softener liquid) and clean the drum -- it's amazing how well this works. NEVER use any kind of Goo Gone or other where the dors are flammable. Honestly, the wet sheet really works! (and kept me from murdering my 16 yod who isn't supposed to be buying gum anyway ...

Oh wow Mary... almost a whole pack!      Thank you for sharing your tip and I'm glad you didn't have to do bodily harm to your 16 year old.

Mary G, I could kiss you!!! This happened to me last week. Not only is it all over my dryer, it got all over a brand new gymboree nightgown and 2 t-shirts. They are ruined One of my guys left a pack of gum in their pockets. (lesson learned- always check the pockets) I started scratching the gum off with my nail, but after 10 min. of that I gave up. I am going to go try this.

The OTHER good thing that came out of this is that it became a "teachable moment" for explaining to my littles exactly WHY I don't like gum in the house or in their mouths!

Don't thank me, thank Google -- I googled "chewing gum on dryer drum" and found the answer!

Fabric softener sheets can clean anyting!!! I've used them to scrub the kitchen floor when I didn't have anything. A friend of my dh's told me you can use the sheets for all sort of cleaning...I am glad to know it! I imagine their abrasiveness helps. I wonder about the Mr. Clean eraser too, it might have worked too??!! I love that thing. But the softener sheets are easier and cheaper...glad to be reminded!!!

And gum in the dryer is a nightmare Mary...we've had the crayons to through...no fun either!!!

For clothes, you could try freezing the gum off. I've never tried it, but supposedly if you get it cold enough it becomes brittle and easy to remove.

Mary, any ideas on how to get colored clay off of clothes? Some of our white clothes recently became very colorful when I did laundry. I guess I need to be more thorough when I check my boys' pockets. Hammers, pliers, rocks, pinecones, toys, etc. are easy to find. Clay and gum are a whole new ballgame.

Yikes and wow, Mary! Thanks for the info. I hope that I never need to use it!

Christine, good luck with the clay. Perhaps freezing would work to get the bulk of it off? For clay that is ground into the clothing, I found:

Vinegar removes red clay

Heloise

I have no personal experience with either method, though.
