I am hosting my first book discussion club on The Kitchen Madonna by Rumer Godden on the 21st and I was wondering if anyone who has any kind of Kitchen Madonna or special saintly image set up "where you work" would mind taking a picture of it for me. I would love to show the children all of the different variations.
If you have a blog, I have offered to put together an impromptu Carnival of Kitchen Madonnas. Just put your picture in a post and I will collect all the links.
Thanks!

I don't really have one in my kitchen, but I keep a framed print of the BM doing the wash, and hanging up the diapers, with a naked baby Jesus on the ground near her, on a shelf in my laundry area (also my main bathroom, but that's a different topic altogether).
LOL
I don't have a spot in the kitchen at this point for one...although I will once we redo the room in the next year.

Rachel,
Please send me a picture if you can of your Laundry Room Madonna.
At the end of the story, Gregory says he's going to make a Sweetshop Madonna for the sweets seller and a Hat Shop Madonna for the lady who makes hats. I am trying to use this story to illustrate to the children that wherever we "do our work" we can find ways to sanctify our work by sending our prayers through Mary to God.

Laura--I was thinking it was called the Polish Madonna, but since I wasn't 100%, I didn't want to send anyone off on a wild goose chase! LOL
Rachel (who has been known to do that from time to time, inadvertently...)

I don't have an actual "kitchen" Madonna, but I do have a lovely 8X10 painting of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
God Bless,

Mine is just like Betsy's. I have her over the sink with an antique holy card and a little basket that I put my prayer needs in. The holy card reads:
Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God, who was conceived without sin, I choose thee, this day, for the Lady and Mistress of this house; I beseech thee through thy Immaculate Conception, to preserve it from pestilence, fire and water; from lightening and tempests, from robbers, from schisms and heresies, from earthquakes and from sudden death. Bless and protect, O Holy Virgin, all its inmates, obtain for them grace to avoid all sin, and save them from every other misfortune and accident. Amen.
I just loved this when I saw it and pray it several times each day as I am working at my sink. Wish I could show a photo, but I don't know how and dh is asleep!

OK, old thread, but we love that book! When we read it, my oldest daughter, maybe 10 or 11 at the time, was inspired to make a series of Kitchen Madonnas, which she drew and colored in herself, then decorated with beads to make them spangly. I wish I had a digital camera! The one we have in the kitchen (actually on the windowsill by the breakfast table) is framed in red, and we have a predominantly blue one, with a cigar-box frame, on the shelf in our dining room.
We had not yet converted to Catholicism when she made these, but my daughter has always had a great love for Mary, and I love my little Kitchen Madonnas as if they were priceless art. Well, they are priceless to me.
Pax,
Sally

Well, the Feast of the Assumption is maybe a good time to revive this conversation, anyway. I also keep a couple of holy cards -- Our Lady of Jerusalem is my favorite -- and a little sweet resin statue which looks hand-carved, even if it isn't -- on the sill above my sink. Today I put lavender and rosemary and flowers in the old blue bottles I keep there, too, so that we have a little kitchen altar in celebration of the feast. I spend so much time standing in front of that window that it seems a good place to have a shrine.
Pax,
Sally

I just read this book, because of this thread. I was so intrigued. Wow!!! What a great read!
My dh is reading to our kids now.
And I need to get myself an icon for the kitchen! I used to have one but I don't know where it is now....
thanks to all for sharing about this.

I posted my (spontaneous) Carnival of Kitchen Madonnas yesterday. Thank you for all the help. Our book group meets today and I am very nervous.
Here it is!
