Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there any problem with giving my kids decaf tea? Once upon a time, I seem to remember there being a problem with how they decaffeinate tea. But it escapes me.

The kids love iced tea, especially in this heat, but I don't want them loading up on caffeine. We don't do herbal teas, just black tea.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how they decaffinate tea.. but the caffiene is highly water soluable.. so if you put the tea into hot water for just a short time.. then dump that water and steep in fresh.. you could get a lot of the caffiene out.

I think you could aways go with one of the organic brands if in doubt.
I do recall that they used to decaffeinate with certain chemicals... but I don't know if that is the case now I did find this on a website though.
Quote:

Do you offer decaffeinated tea?

No, we do not offer decaffeinated tea due to the potentially harmful chemicals used in the decaffeination process and the lack of flavor in commercially decaffeinated teas. The good news is that you can decaffeinate your own teas without sacrificing quality or flavor. Simply steep the tea for 30 - 45 seconds then pour out the liquid from that brew. Caffeine is water soluble and most of the caffeine will be extracted in the first steeping. Steep the tea leaves again for the appropriate amount of time. This process will remove up to 95% of the caffeine that was in the tea.

Does tea have caffeine?

Yes, except for decaffeinated or herbal tisane. However one cup of tea has about half the caffeine content as the same amount of coffee. Here are teas listed in order of least amount of caffeine to highest amount: White Teas (extremely low), Green Teas (low), Oolong (Medium), Black (Moderate to High). Herbal Tisanes have no caffeine.

The exception to this rule is Matcha green tea, which has twice the caffeine as an equal amount of coffee.

Just from personal experience, even decaf teas aren't completely caffeine free. I usually use decaf Lipton tea bags when I make a pitcher of iced tea (along with a cup of sugar, originally being from the South). However, I love it so much I end up drinking almost the whole pitcher by myself in one day. Unfortunately, I am very sensitive unless I have consistent levels of caffeine daily, and I usually get a headache the day after I drink all of that tea because I am not ingesting the same level of caffeine the next.

I don't know if that made any sense. I'm just saying that you can still get quite a bit of caffeine even when you drink decaf. if you drink a lot of it.
