Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone tell me about this school? We came across it while searching on NROTC schools. It is Catholic, which, if it is a good Catholic school, appeals to me. And it is in California, on the other side of the country, which appeals to ds 16.

Thanks!

I can't speak to how Catholic it is. I always wanted to attend there, but God had other plans for me. It is the most beautiful university in San Diego. It sits up on a hill above Mission Bay and looks out over the Ocean. The Immaculata is one of the the prettiest churches I have ever been in.
I have one brother who went there and I doubt he attended mass once while he was there. He is no longer in the Church. (out of 7 children I am the only one s living our faith) My father received his Masters there and is a very faithful man. Of course dad was pretty grounded to begin with. I think the oppurtunity is there if ds wants it. From looking at their web page they look like they are heavy on Peace and Justice issues.
I will say that I think there is a wonderful pocket of faithful Catholics in San Diego, a few are on this list. After my visit there last November I really want to move back, mainly because there is an active Catholic home education community. (And who would not want to live next door to Erica?????)
Molly, hope I made sense this morning before my cup of coffee.

When I am in S.D. I always attend Mass at the Immaculata. It is on the Univ. grounds but it is a Parish church. The Pastor is wonderful and the atmosphere blessed. My sis got her MA at USD. I doubt that it could be described as "Real" Catholic...BUT if your Faith is important to you, you will definitely be able to find support in the Parish.
I know a 4Real mom who is active in the Parish there. I could mail her if you want me to....

Which 4Real mom is active there, Stephanie?

I'm sorry I didn't reply when I saw this last week, Molly.

My first response would have to be, 'NO WAY'! That is my gut reaction after years of reading about kooky things that go on there. I wish I had more specifics for you, but as Mary Chris said, there is a big emphasis on peace and justice as well as a fair bit of negative press about h*m*s*xual issues (professors, campus groups, etc.) and general lack of Catholicism (crucifixes being taken out of classrooms, co-ed dorms, etc.). I have heard young people talk about the fact that students who attend USD (not all, of course) come from a lot of money and it is not uncommom to see students driving BMWs and the like. This is probably true everywhere. I can easily speak with others here who could give more specifics if you need.

That being said, I do believe there could be change in the future. I believe that Bishop Cordileone (our newer, fantastic auxillary bishop) has been put in some kind of overseer position of the college and that can only be a good thing.

I recently read a story about a homeschooling family deciding to send their oldest to Notre Dame because of good things that were starting to happen there. Was it in Faith and Family or Heart & Mind? I want to say that it was Ana Braga-Henebry who wrote the article, but I'm not 100% sure. (Can I say that I'm a little embarrassed about my faulty memory this morning - gosh!) Anyway, the article was very enlightening as far as college choices and maybe USD will become a great Catholic college in the future. It seems like it would be a great uphill battle though......

There is another very small, very new Catholic college in San Diego, John Paul the Great Catholic University, that I have heard wonderful things about.

And, finally, as Mary Chris said, there is a large, active Catholic homeschooling community here. There are good young adult groups, pro-life events, and general Catholic events for students who so desire. San Diego just hosted two young adult conferences and John Paul the Great will host their annual conference this month. Good things are here and at USD for those who are interested and motivated.

This is a very long answer, Molly! If I had to make the decision today for my oldest, I would not choose to send her there. I'm sorry. I hope this helps a bit and please let me know if you want more specifics. I can send out an email and probably receive some quick responses.

God bless!

Thanks Erica! My dh's first reaction when I first mentioned it was "No way!". He has been to San Diego on business several times and was very dismayed by the h*m*s*xuality that he saw flaunted in the streets, at least the area he was in, and the state of the Catholic churches he has attended.

I said, but there are all those great homeschoolers there in San Diego. Which is why I came here to ask. Glad I did!

Molly, he must have been here during pride week - uggh - and must have stayed near downtown and Hillcrest. It's not like that everywhere around here! :) Thankfully! I hope you find a good school for your ds.
