I have a feeling this has been discussed a million times before - but I can't find the threads...
We rearranged the bedrooms today, and have put the 2yo in her own bed in her sisters' room for the first time. (where is the nervous mommy icon? LOL) We want to revamp bedtimes now because of that -- putting the 4 and 2 year old to bed earlier, at the same time.
So here is my question (finally!  ) we are going to start the rule of "you must lie in your bed and try to sleep, and mommy will read to you as long as you do that", trying to get them to fall asleep on opposite sides of the room while I'm softly reading.
So I don't want exciting, high energy picture books, and I don't want anything too short, or waaay over their heads - probably on the wordier side as opposed to lots of great pictures they will want to stay up and see. I'm hoping the books will be the force that will keep them in bed, because this is a big step for the 2yo and she isn't the most obedient of children! 
Does anyone else "read their kids to sleep" and any suggestions for this age group on good books for that?

My little ones have enjoyed The Teddy Robinson Storybook, as well as Beatrix Potter, A.A. Milne, and some selections from The Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass.

The original Raggedy Ann books by Johnny Gruelle are very entertaining (without being rowdy at bedtime). My ds (4 yo) has enjoyed them tremendously. I do have to say that there really is very little plot- just the characters having a happy time. All the stories end happily, and whoever is mean decides at the end to be good, after all.
We read them all and now have gone on to the real Little House books (we've done all the My First Little House series). I can tell these stories, which have more tension and even danger in them, upset my ds a little at bedtime. We will finish reading the first one, and then maybe wait on the rest for a few months. I was thinking of trying "Stuart Little" next.

I have storytime books for my kids, but it is before bed and prayers. There is something about the repetition of the books that we have that gets them "in the mood" for bedtime. We have a little of this and that, but the kids know them by heart.
I love all the suggestions from Lisa, and I would add something like The Five Little Peppers to that group too.
I hope the new move goes smoothly!

Whatever books you choose, something that has worked nicely here is to have a few (for us it's Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Quick as a Cricket) that you read at least one of those each night, after two less-read books, I read one of these three. Because they are familiar and a regular part of the bedtime routine, the children seem to associate them with going to sleep and usually doze off during or just after.

My boys love the Paddington Bear books. I think we've read about 4 of them now, and there are 11 in the series.
Currently, we're reading Trumpet of the Swan (which is my FAVORITE EB White children's book -- we've read all 3 of his this summer.) In the last year, we've also read most of the Laura Ingalls books (they got bored with the Shores of Silver Lake).
We've also read Mrs. Piggly Wiggly (and I "lost" the book 1/2 way through bc it bored me to tears) and Uncle Wiggly (which I have also "lost" because I was bored again.) So, I don't recommend those :)

Along with Teddy Robinson, our favourite little girl chapter books are the Milly-Molly-Mandy stories by Joyce Lankester Brisley, and My Naughty Little Sister books by Dorothy Edwards.
