Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What things do you consider important in caring for yourself?

Any special routines, products, devotions, hobbies, outings, etc?

Sarah, I hope you get lots of good replies. With a c-section coming up in 2 days, all I can think about is sleep, my incision healing, and no more swollen ankles. But I realize these don't apply to everyone!!
I don't have much time but I will start here by saying the number 1 most important thing I do to care for myself is have my prayer time each morning. I don't always do it, and when I don't, I can tell!
I would love to hear what other moms do. I think the above takes care of many of my spiritual needs, but physically, I tend to neglect myself which isn't good. So, great question!! Thanks for the thread!

I was even more swollen after my c/s. I'll be praying for you, Becky.

To answer your question, Sarah, the one thing that I do to keep my sanity is a daily long shower. That is my mainstay...I get my good cries in, just get to hear my own thoughts, pray...it's my totally quiet and alone time.

I do other things, but as I was having a good cry the other day, I realized that I had this pattern, where I NEEDED that shower on a regular basis, not to just get clean! I really need it in pregnancy and post-partum.

My son keeps making the point that "Daddy takes short showers, you take long showers, Mommy."

And Son, I KNOW!

That has REALLY been bothering me lately. . .not showering!

It has been so hard to get one in. The kids really cannot be left alone and I've been too tired to get up with dh. Then, dh hasn't been home most evenings.

Good point Jenn, showering is a must!

For me it is the sacraments. Daily mass, weekly confession, weekly holy hour, daily rosary, and maybe a shower

Right now, with a 2mo old, it's the basics: taking care of the baby, sleep, prayer, at least a 20 min walk, a shower and breakfast. These need to happen.

Second tier of importance: reading to the children, laundry, meals and grocery shopping. It's a good day if these happen.

Third tier: cleaning, reading, computer time, finding clothes that fit and getting outside. I almost feel back to normal if these happen!

Everything else is icing on the cake right now. Some school time with the children, some socializing, some alone time, some at-home-spa routines and some planning special days and summer outings. Then I really feel back to normal and on top of the world

Time alone with my husband is essential to me--both time for prayer and time for relaxation with him. After we get the babies to bed around 7:30, we pray our daily Rosary together and then spend the rest of the evening chatting, watching a movie, listening to music, pursuing hobbies...I try to get a lot of my "work" done during the day so that he and I can enjoy this time together.

Also, time outside--I'm feeling more and more a need for this as summer gets in full-swing. I'm not a "nature gal" but there is something very refreshing about a short walk or a picnic. (And it doesn't hurt that the babies are always calm when they're in the stroller or sling either! )
