In another thread, Theresa mentioned setting up a blog search bar:

Dawn, if you look at the sidebar on my blog, scroll down a bit and below the archives there is a search box. That way if you want to find anything on my blog (say, the one about chestnut trees) and don't want to wade through all the posts in a category (nature study), you can do a keyword search.
It is pretty convenient. |

It does sound convenient! How do I do it? Does anyone know if there is something in Typepad that lets us do this?
Also, does anyone know where our archives go when they disappear from the sidebar? I started blogging in March 2006, but my archives only go back to August 2006. I know they're not *gone* but is there a setting somewhere (in the control panel or something) that allows you to keep more months available on your sidebar? Or is it a space thing?
And while I'm thinking of it ... what are the latest blog gadgets you are enjoying? Any widgets to recommend?

I dont know how typepad works, but for me the search box is a widget.
There should be a setting on your blog (control panel perhaps?) for how long to show your archives, also.

Dawn, you can just click on the word archives and it will bring you to a page where your archives are listed by month. I'm now going to go search for that widget of Theresa's.

Another tip using google: if you know what you're looking for and where you found it, but don't know exactly where it's located, you can type this into your google search bar:
keyword keyword keyword "keyword phrase" site:the-site-where-you-saw-it.com and it will limit searching to just that site.
e.g.,
if i'm looking for banana recipes and i only wanted to search dawn's blog, i'd type
banana site:dawnathome.typepad.com or
bananas site:dawnathome.typepad.com
and google will give you every post on dawn's blog that has banana (or bananas)
hth!
i've been trying to look for a widget that has a telescoping search feature (i.e., search within results) -- but no one has made it yet. any of you tech people out there?

Dawn, Typepad has a Technorati widget, and a search box is one of the configuration options.
You can install a Google search box in your sidebar (I forget how, but I saw it on the Google info page), but when I tried it a while back, my sidebar was too narrow for the box.
Oh, and re the archives--I put a link to my archives right at the top of my Bonny Glen sidebar, to make it easier for readers to get to the categories or the early months. You can get your Archives permalink by clicking on any archive link as KC suggested.

I do this all the time. I find it easier and more accurate than some sites own search engine. Catholic Culture is a good one to use this feature to pull up authors for different activities.

Thank you for all the help!
I've succesfully added my archives link and a blog search bar.
Now my next question is, have any of you added the amazon widget that lets you search amazon from your site OR the one where you can showcase things you like? I have tried, but seem to be having trouble getting them on my sidebars.

Woo hoo!
Your site is just so rich, Dawn. It will be a blessing to many to be able to search it with ease.
I had the Amazon search bar widget for awhile. I think I deleted it for lack of space awhile back. It installed no problemo.
