Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A new Masterpiece Theatre is airing this weekend, and it sounds interesting: The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton.

It's on WGBH, which is the Boston area PBS, but I would assume it is airing elsewhere. Check your local listings!

Just finished perusing the link. Thanks, Dawn.

Found this interesting quote The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton:

In the preface, Isabella Beeton discusses the motivation behind the book:

"What moved me, in the first instance, to attempt a work like this, was the discomfort and suffering which I had seen brought upon men and women by household mismanagement. I have always thought that there is no more fruitful source of family discontent than a housewife's badly cooked dinners and untidy ways. Men are now so well served out of doors -- at their clubs, well-ordered taverns, and dining-houses -- that, in order to compete with the attraction of these places, a mistress must be thoroughly acquainted with the theory and practice of cookery, as well as be perfectly conversant with all the other arts of making and keeping a comfortable home."

No feminist, Isabella embraced the traditional roles of the woman as queen of the domestic sphere and the man as king of the public sphere. She is unequivocal in maintaining that the home and its management are the woman's responsibility.

Does anyone know anything about her life? Was the PBS show pretty accurate? It was really well done but, wow, what a sad life!!

I know nothing about her life, and found the show fascinating. I'm hoping that it was portrayed accurately. My dd8 was spellbound, and this morning is talking with an English accent. My ds5 lasted for the first 15 minutes and then fell asleep!

I couldn't stay up last night, so I TiVo'd it. I hope to watch it tonight. I'm glad it was a good show!

We were at the camp this weekend. No TV, no phone, no Internet, no nothing.

I missed it.    When does it air again? Does it?

Cay,

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but in my neck of the woods, it doesn't air until Sunday, May 27th. Just go to your local PBS station online and look up the Masterpiece Theatre schedule.

HTH

Paddington gave me The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs Beeton as an anniversary present , this year. I highly reccomend it! It certainly seemed a rather sad life.

Although, she is presented as not being anything like as domestic as her forward would suggest!
