Here's a silly question. What do you leave for your kids to eat for dinner when you and dh go out? My dh and I rarely go out for dinner but it seems in the last 2 weeks we have had an odd number of obligations that occur during meal time. Tonight is the annual Right to Life dinner that we always go to. Normally, we would splurge and get them pizza, but we had to do that earlier in the week. So, when you have a babysitter, or one of the older kids watching the littles, what do you leave them for dinner?
Just a side note, perhaps I'm too protective but I don't feel comfortable with babysitters actually cooking dinner for my kids (unless it is a grown up). About the most I let them do is pop popcorn or heat something up in the microwave.
Thanks!

You could make up sandwiches in advance.
They could have breakfast for dinner: cereal, muffins you already baked, reheat waffles in the toaster.
If you have salad eaters, you could assemble a cobb salad and they can put on the dressing when they are ready to eat.
If you have the time, you can have dinner ready in the crockpot for them. I will do sloppy joes, or chicken rice soup, or such.
I don't allow the stove to be used when an adult is not in the house.

I usually do the pizza thing as well. But ... you could make a casserole. I would probably choose Mostacolli (I am not sure that the spelling is correct). It makes a lot and is an easy clean up. Then you could serve salad and green beans or brocolli.
Also a roast chicken (or fried chicken) with salads to accompany it.
I like the crockpot idea, but mine is broken . What about chili, hot dogs, frito pie?
Good luck choosing.

I often cook in the crockpot during the day if I know we will be out at meal time. It saves the last minute realization that I wanted to prepare something ahead but now haveto choose between that and washing my hair! Favorites here include whole chicken stuffed with wild rice and veggies...whole meal, one pot! (I layer extra breasts underneath in case one chicken is not enough....soups, stew, red beans and rice (true Lousiana fare), and pork tenderloin and potatoes. I start the meal while I clean up from breakfast and turn it off or on warm when it is done. Then I serve the kids on paper plates just as the sitter or Granny is arriving, assigning clean-up chores before go. This works quite well for us and keeps some of our normal family structure in tact even when we can't be here.

Ok, we ALWAYS (or pretty much) have my older daughter make Kraft Mac'n'Cheese -- it's great comfort food for the littles and they know that all is well and Mom and Dad will be home to kiss them goodnight. We also do that because we know the littles will gobble it all up and there won't be any problems with "so and so didn't finish her dinner, should she get dessert????" It definitely minimizes the stress on the older siblings and keeps everyone happy.

Nothing! I make dinner and clean it up before I leave. then I have snack stuff that is pretty much just open and eat kind of things. I tell the sitter how much and about when they will want the snack.

If I have my wits about me I do a crockpot meal ahead. If not, then Mac and cheese with hot dogs is easy enough for babysitters and big kids to fix. Also sub sandwiches.

Thanks for the crock pot ideas! Duh! I use mine quite frequently so I don't know why I didn't think of that for when we go out. Mary, your Mac N Cheese post made me grin. We had a "favorite babysitter" who loved Kraft Macaroni N Cheese. Whenever she came she knew (and the kids knew) that was going to be dinner! Unforunately, now she is away at college . Anyway, thanks everyone! The thought of serving pizza to the kids yet again wasn't sitting well with me!
