Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It is true! Today's official day is Hug an Australian Day!

I know there are some lovely ladies from the land down under here. Aussieannie and Erin are the two that pop to my mind. Any others?

I don't want to leave anyone out! Is there a way to find out who here is from Australia? I couldn't figure out how to do it with the search feature (not everyone lists location in their profile) so I thought maybe they would see this post and let us know who they are!

Hugs to you all!

How about coming down next year for the WYD? You will be able to hug them in abundance then!

Chem39 is another regular Australian here and when we was at camp last week, we both talked about 4Real during the Women's Forum, so God willing there will be more Australians to hug when the day comes around again, next year!

May hugs to all of you too on this great day!

Matilda

Thank you You're arriving on what flight to give me my hug?

What a nifty tradition. Interesting article, I just want it known that I can indeed cooee

Very appropriate post from our own "Waltzing Matilda" after all you do 'carry' the name of our 'national anthem.'

Thank you every one for your warm hugs.

Oh, Erin, I would be there in a minute if I could.

And I would love to hear a "cooee".

Hope y'all have a great day.

OK, now that Erin broached the subject -- how is it that your nickname is "Waltzing Mathilda" and yet you don't live down under???? Is that playing fair with us folks who want to know all about everyone?????

Mary G.-

I talked about that decision here (you have to scroll down a little bit). I didn't intend to tease or deceive. I love the name Matilda because of my grandmother and waltzing is just one of the many dances I love to do. It was also one of the first dances I learned as a little girl at our gi-normous Czech family reunions (and the Texas Two Step, of course)!

When I was younger, Europe was my obsession. I desperately wanted to tour Europe. I got to do that in college, so now, the only far away place I can say I would really love to see is Australia. (Trying to convince my Dad to go first since he was a big scuba diver when he was younger!)

Matilda, thank you for sharing the links, I followed them all up and I was facinated with your story about your grandmother.

I had a grandmother like that too - her name was Eunice - and if you have ever watched the movie "What's Up Doc?" with Barbara Streisand, coming up the esculator, with her glib comment, you would say it sums up the world's thoughts on that name...

But....I love it! I loved my nana dearly and I wanted my Grace to have it as her first name (she has it as her second name) but nana said to me before she passed away, "Don't name your children Eunice!" (she knew of my plans...)

She was teased as a child too and a kindly old nun pulled her aside at school one day and told her that Mary's grandmother (St Anne's mother) was Eunice, now I don't know if that is true, I do know that Timothy's grandmother was Eunice and maybe she was confused with that..   Interestingly enough my daughter looks just like nana and she would have peace over the fact I allowed it to be her second name instead.

Boy, I've rambled...thanks again Matilda for your story and I do really hope you get down here one day, the same way I hope I visit your beautiful country one day...well, I'll keep dreaming!

Aussieannie,

How funny that our stories are so similar! My grandmother didn't forbid me from using her name, but I chose it for my second daughter without asking because I already knew what she would say. My grandma's name was Alzbeta Matilda (pron: Alz-shbee-et-ta)and my daughter is Elise Alzbeta Matilda. She also takes very much after my side of the family and looks just like pictures of my grandma when she was a little girl!

Let's see if dreams can come true. With enough prayer, I am sure they can!
