Ugh! My dd, 11, will be taking the CAT test in May, so I thought I would check out the Core Knowledge series What Your 5th Grader Needs to Know, just to see where we are. Well, I had leafed through it, including the science section, and then let my daughter take it to read. I did not leaf through it thoroughly enough!
She came downstairs today and told me that she read what s*x is in the book. She was unhappy and said she didn't like what she read. I went and got the book. It has a very brief description of the physical act. Nothing horrible, like some other books, but certainly not what I consider to be "CORE KNOWLEDGE" for my 11 yr old!!!
We spent the afternoon on the couch reading The Joyful Mysteries of Life and I think she feels a little better. I knew the time was coming for this anyway, but this was not the plan.
I am trying to get over my "mother guilt" but I am kicking myself for not being more careful. I usually am WAY overprotective.
Just a heads up!

Geez! Molly I understand what you mean -- here, you're thinking you're giving your daughter something inocuous to read .... it's an endless struggle isn't it?

Isn't it sad that we have to pre-screen every single thing that comes into the home? I get so frustrated!
Sounds like you handled a tough situation very well, though!

The Joyful Mysteries of Life is very beautiful and simple. It focuses on the vocation of parents, on the body getting ready for a baby and the Sacrament of marriage. The physical description is very, very brief and described much more reverently and delicately than a secular book would handle it. It also stresses that it is a private, special matter not to be discussed with others.
So, for the most part, it came out okay. It is still a hard thing for me to accept. I just want to keep them little!

Thank you for the heads up. I hadn't gotten this book yet, but it was on my to get list. Now I know I need to monitor it carefully. Kind of a disappointment.

Molly, I'm so sorry about this. I would be furious. I don't have The Joyful Mysteries of Life, but I think I'm going to get it. I think you dod a great job. Who would've thought?

I'm sorry you and your dd went through this! It sounds like you made a great recovery, however.
