The dishwasher repairman was here today(again, yes, I know) and he told me that TJ's dishwasher detergent encourages algae growth. He relayed a gross story of a coupleof his customers. I didn't have algae (that would require a water supply to the DW and I didn't have that either) and I've switched to Mrs. Meyer's everything since my vinegar-and-fruitflies fiasco, but I thought I would pass that little factoid along to all you TJs fans.

I have to ask, Elizabeth, what was the fiasco with the vinegar and fruit flies? I use vinegar to clean our wood floors and would not be too happy if I saw flies setting up for a picnic.

I am passing on your TJ's info. Thanks!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Elizabeth, we had that same problem! (the fruitflies, not the algae. (that would require both a dishwasher and a Trader Joes near by, none of which I have the luxury!)

I have a question about Mrs. Meyers, I've been using the multipurpose cleaner, (lemon verbena, love that scent!) but I can't find it in the bigger bottle to refill the smaller spray bottle. Have you had luck finding it at your local grocer or do you have to order it? (I can find the small bottle at Kroger, but not the big one!) Thanks!

Not fair, ladies, I just got on the Castile Soap bandwagon, thanks to earlier posts, and now you're all switching!

Here's a question, though-- for these natural products--do you have to rinse and area after you've cleaned? I can't seem to get around to cleaning it the first time, but if I have to rewash after its done . . .

Oh, this is exactly what I am trying to find out, especially regarding the counter-top spray....

Tj's dishwasher detergent never got my dishes clean!

I have been using either Seventh Generation (Target now sells) or the Melaluca dishwasher stuff.

We kicked the vinegar habit last summer because of the flies. I have switched to Tough and Tender from Melaluca tea tree oil cleaner) for surfaces in the kitchen and Tub and Tile for bathroom.

I am going to order Mrs Meyers Lavender All Purpose from Quail Cove to try it out.

The Castile Soap idea is intriguing - I will have to look up the thread.

Did anyone see this article in the Home section of the Washington Post this past week? Click on "How Green Cleaners Measure Up" for some comparisons.

By the way, I don't tend to clean "green" but at least I knew who Mrs. Meyers was from reading this article a few days ago. And I might even try the Planet Ultra laundry detergent they recommend.

Good article - thanks for sending the link Irene. Cleaning green has made a huge difference to my kids' allergies - I must confess that I do hide a bottle of chlorox for my kitchen sink - nothing else gets it quite as white!!!
