We just came home with the altar linen from Mass at the Newman House tonight and nobody could tell me if there was something special that I need to do when I wash it. (I asked one priest and he told me there was a very special way to wash it- you give it to the person and it mysteriously appears back on the altar cleaned and pressed!...lot of help that was!) I have the altar linen and some other laundry from the NH so I need to get going on it tonight if I can. Anyone able to tell me what I need to do with it?

Eeek. I don't know for sure, but I would think that you should wash it in a seperate basin and pour out the water in the backyard, not the drain, in case there has been any particles of the Eucharist on it.

From Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite: The Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours by Peter J. Elliott: "Before they are washed, corporals and purifiers should always be rinsed first and the water should be disposed of into the garden or down the sacrarium. Then they are washed. For obvious practical reasons, purifiers should never be made of a nonabsorbent synthetic fabric. Unlike the corporal, they should not be starched."
From another source "Preparing for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass" by Janice Smyth:
"Purificator, Palls and Corporals used in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass should be placed in a basin of clear water for fiteen minutes. They should not be unfolded at this time. There may be particles of the sacred Host among them. If so, consume them.
The first water is then discarded into a sacrarium or onto the earth (preferably in the flowers or shrubs). The linens are washed either by hand after soaking in hot water or on "gentle" cycle in hot water in machine alone. Sacred linens are never washed with the family laundry.
Ironing suggestions:
All sacred linens which are made of linen content are more easily and more perfectly ironed if they are sprinkled lightly, wrapped in a plastic bag, and allowed to set for at least two hours before ironing. (Never set aside lenens for more than one day.) Iron all embroidered linens from the wrong side on a padded board or on a clean white towel for padding. It is good to place a clean white sheet around the base of the ironing board (on the floor) before ironing a long altar cloth."
Not sure if that answers your questions, but that's the only Catholic references I have to altar linens. All the rest I have are Episcopal.

See I KNEW there was something special we needed to do! Thanks Anne and Jenn!! Jenn, one more question, do you think instead of on "gentle " I could wash it on the "whitest whites" cycle that my machine has?
Ok, now I feel good about knowing what I need to do!
I knew you ladies would have an answer. I stopped asking at the Newman House and just said "I'll find out when I get home!"

I was sacristan for a short time. You can wash in your washing machine ONLY if it drains directly to your yard NOT if you're on city sewer. I always soaked first in a metal tub (plastic is porous), poured the water in the flower beds, then laundered in the machine. Also, you shouldn't use bleach - it really does a number on linen. I did use whitest white cycle, and sometimes even used spot treatment in some areas - lipstick is a pain to remove from purificators. I even took the lint out of the lint traps and buried under my flowers - that's not a requirement - it just made me feel better.  Linen is a pain to iron - use a squirt bottle with plain water and get your iron really hot. Hang it up right away. The purificators and corporal do have to be ironed with the creases in. Hope this helps some.

When I was a sacristan we always rinsed the corporals and purificators in the sacrarium before washing them in the washer (only sacred linens in that cycle!). (We did use a regular washer; we were assured that the rinse in the sacrarium took care of the Sacred Species--Jesus is present only as long as the appearances of bread and wine remain.) I second, third, and fourth what's been said about disposing of the water in the shrubs if your sacristy doesn't have a sacrarium.
After the linens were washed we ironed them (didn't dry them first). Jennifer mentioned the creases--there's a special way to fold and iron the linens.
The finger towels we did not rinse in the sacrarium, as the priest only used them after the lavabo.
I loved doing Jesus' laundry! Now, if I could just get as excited about the dirty clothes we produce around here. Still Jesus' laundry, I guess, but much smellier.
