Ok, my 4 yo was, unknown to me, was trying to melt his purple crayons to make a wax coating for his paper airplanes (so they could fly them in the rain). He used a desk lamp bent over an old can with crayons in it (evidently this is the same thing the 6 yo, and 10 yo have done earlier without spills). Now, I'm not concerned with the light bulb or lamp which all have some purple coating - but the wax container and wax went flying and splattered the wall, the chalkboard, baseboards, carpet and desk. We got it off everything except the carpet, so now I have a purple speckled beige towel (trying to iron the wax up off the carpet) and a purple bespeckled beige carpet.
It is sort of funny - and it would be purple for lent. No one was hurt and everyone now knows that all wax melting must be done outside (which means with my knowledge and supervision as they need permission to go outside).
However, it would be nice if I could figure out how to get all this wax up from the carpet. Any ideas? Do I still just keep trying the ironing?
This is so ridiculous a request especially after reading all the prayer requests. I am offering up all the extra effort and frustration (minor though it really is) for those intentions.
Thanks for any ideas.
Janet

Janet,
I've never had to remove wax from carpeting, but I have had to remove it from other hard surfaces. Could you put some ice over it so it hardens, and then scrape it off?

This is what Heloise recommends:
Candle Wax on Carpet
Ice and a metal pan
Put ice cubes into a metal pan. Place it right on top of the candle wax until the wax is frozen solid. With a small hammer, hit the wax to break it up. Pick up the pieces. Then apply dry-cleaning solvent on a clean cloth to remove any leftover residue.
Hints from Heloise
HTH!

From the Crayola Website stain removal guide:
Cleaning Materials needed:
Sponge
Paper towels
Dull knife or metal spoon
WD-40® (car part lubricant)
Liquid dishwashing detergent
Small stiff bristle brush
Amodex® ink & stain remover
Stain Removal Tips:
Scrape excess crayon off with a dull-edge knife or metal spoon. Spray with WD-40 and let stand a few minutes. With a small, stiff bristle brush work crayon stain and wipe with paper towels. Respray with WD-40 and apply liquid dishwashing detergent on the sprayed area; work in with the brush and wipe stain away with a damp sponge. If stain remains, repeat the procedure. For another method, use any brand upholstery cleaner as directed on the container.
*************
I have used the WD-40 method with crayon on fabric (or was it the wall?) and it really does work. I think we got the oily, WD-40 residue up with dish detergent.
HTH

Well...I feel like I remember my Mom doing something like putting down a rag or a piece of paper and ironing it up???
Never had to do it myself on a rug, but I feel like I've done it on clothing or table cloths??
Hazy memory here -- and I don't want the ruin of your carpet on my conscience...oh and reading again -- it seems like the towel didnt work!!

Janet,
I'm sorry you have a mess. I really am. But this so tickled me...How brilliant to waterproof one's airplanes!

Goo Gone will dissolve the wax and get it off (check it on your carpet in an inconspicuous spot).. but odds are good that the purple will leave stains.. so once you get the wax out.. you might need to also try a stain remover

Just a status report and a thanks - the WD-40, crayola method worked best. In case you ever wanted to know, melted purple crayon turns pink when cleaned. So now I have pink and purple polka dots .
Right now with nothing to lose, we have added AAdvantage cleaner, Oxiclean powder, ivory soap, googone and goop (for cleaning hands after car work). We are off to see if we can find amodex as recommended for ink removal as the above combinations have not resulted in much progress.
Jodie, should I ask how you knew purple would leave stains?
My guess is that the ice method might have worked fairly well to get off the residue if I had not already tried the ironing method. The crayola recommended method might have worked if it had not been basically liquid when it hit and sunk into the carpet and there was tons of it (the 4 yo was quite successful at melting his crayons).
We also have an iron shaped mess in the 12 yo boys bedroom carpet. He tried to clean up his own mess and did point out the stain to me right away when it happened several weeks ago and has never since melted crayon in his bedroom but has done it outside ever since. (I should have known there were others doing it if he was - and my guess is that it was the 10 yo science fans idea in the first place as he was the one that started putting straight pins in on top with other paper to make helicopters and experiments with all different patterns of wing foldings for speed, distance, etc.) Unfortunately, I think that either the old iron deposited every known coating that was on it (dd used that old iron for crafting so no telling what was on the plate) or he burned the carpet so we pretty much decided a throw rug over the burn spot is the best bet in that room. Hopefully with everyone's suggestions our school room carpet will fare better.
Yes, Elizabeth, I have to laugh too. It was quite clever - but oh so messy. We are very good at messes around here.
Well off to get the amodex and make some dinner. I let you know if we are successful. If not, well, I guess I'll have a reminder to pray for all those here with serious requests - and thank God that my children are healthy.

Oh Janet, I love that you equated the "purple wax episode" with Lent!!! Several years ago, we had recently moved into a home with a woodburner...our boys decided to anoint one another with ashes from the ashpan on the back porch, much to my consternation and dismay! Only later in the day, as we prepared for evening Mass, did I make the connection of their antics with the solemn feast...Ash Wednesday. Of course! They were just observing the occasion with fitting Catholic symbolism! God bless all little boys who help their mothers celebrate the liturgical year so memorably!
