With all the chatter about cleaning, dishwashers, etc. maybe would should start a new forum on home maintenance, etc.! Anyway, we are going to get a new kitchen floor sometime this Spring. Currently I have a linoleum floor that shows everything. I detest it! Anyone have any good recommendations for something that wears well and does not show much of anything?

Well, I have Pergo. It wears pretty well (so far) but you have to be careful about spills; the Pergo will warp if it gets soaked. Repair is pretty easy, though, and we ordered lots of extra pieces. Like any wood-look floor, it shows dust/pet hair pretty readily in sunshine.

Maria, you might check out this old thread. A year later, and my kitchen floor is still the same linoleum as ever.

I have ceramic tile. Actually, the entire house is ceramic tile. I wanted oak, but this was much cheaper. I think I did the kitchen floor in 2 days, but I had to lay cement board first, and then the tile the second day. Oh, and then another day to do the grout. I went with a very neutral beige tile and very similar grout color.
I did use a glazed versus unglazed tile. And now, I would do a darker tile and a darker grout, because no matter how much you clean, grout will darken over time.
Oh, and I would put a grout sealer on, too. So it is a 4-day installation job.
And yes, I did it myself.

Paula, you are amazing!
I have been tinkering with the idea of tiling my backsplash, myself, but am a little fearful! It sure would change the look of our kitchen, and I would love to include tiles made by dc at the local pottery/ceramic store.
As far as the floors go, we have wood. For all the reasons mentioned, I chose not to go with tile, though my friend who has it says cleaning is a snap (they did go with a darker color and grout.) Another friend, in FL, says it is cold (and here in MI, I can imagine it would be worse,) and when you drop anything, it shatters, sending little slivers everywhere. I never knew about the dangers of falling and serious injury that I think Elizabeth mentioned in the old thread.
We need to get our floors screened (like sanding, but not as deep) and refinished. It will be 11 years in Oct. and they have held up well to 6 boys and a crazy lab (retriever, not chemical!)
We did go with a thicker wood, so we have a true lifetime plus with the wood.
We have had dishwasher overflows (make sure to tell dc that dishsoap is NOT a replacement for dishWASHER soap!,) heavy items dropped, lots of spills and wear and tear. By now, it looks "distressed" . We are planning having them redone in a year, when we will have saved enough to have flooring laid in the living room and dining rooms, and have them all done together. Right now, the wood flooring is in the foyer, kitchen, the hall area that runs in a circle from kitchen to bath to foyer and back to kitchen (which the boys run around like wild men at times!) and in the bedrooms. Up there, in the bedrooms, it looks nearly brand new.
Didn't mean to gab so long!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Thanks Stacy!
Yes, they can be colder, but I'm in Minnesota, the land of cold!
You should do the tile backsplash. They always have free classes at Home Depot and incorporating the kids tiles would be so beautiful.
