Okay...so on Thursday, March Madness starts (NCAA basketball tournaments for those of you who may not know). And I love watching the games with my dh (basketball coach) and sons.
I'm curious to hear from some of you who may watch March Madness how you do this temperately in your own homes.
Some of our "limitations":
- no cable, just the local CBS station (which has most of the games)
- we mute all the commercials.
But other than that, we don't really have any restrictions -- and since it's Lent, I was just wondering what other basketball fanatics do (if there are any 4Real basketball fanatics!)

Yes, we are "March mad" here. My boys were busy last night filling out brackets. I haven't really thought about particular restrictions on it. I mostly watch Gonzaga though so it depends on how far they go. My husband and the oldest sons watch more games, though not all. Mostly has to do with interest in the particular teams. We do have cable and watch if it's a game of interest.

Hi, Maryan! I have a confessional dispensation from March Madness temperance.Im not kidding! My husband is a producer/director for ESPN. His feelings are hurt if we miss games. So...Father said to encourage the kids to watch and to talk to dad about games and standings and to get caught up in what is really "family culture." He suggested we mute and turn away from commercials and say "Hail Marys" instead. Alternatively, I am to give them quick housekeeping chores during commercials. BTW, my boys love my pastor .

That would cure my guilt!! Although I'm glad you mentioned "family culture" -- because we could argue that. The boys wrestle with Daddy during the commercials and talk about basketball (which is Daddy's profession). That makes me feel better about our basketball 24-7 month of March!!

And you guys are on top of things -- we take forever mulling them over and then fill them out just before the first game begins!! Glad to hear I'm not the only March Mad house.

We are a March madness family here. But this year we have a problem....Syracuse is our team and they were "snubbed" by the selection committee and we are not in it.
No one has even checked the brackets yet. They are all in shock that we don't have a team in it.

That was an odd omission Joann. I was so surprised. Now, it's time to choose another team and get back into the spirit of it! If you like orange, Texas could be a fun one to cheer for.Kevin Durant has all kinds of promise and talent and their coach, Rick Barnes is a great guy! He was at George Mason way back when my dh worked in the athletic department there. Since Mason rarely is a post-season contender (though they seem to have been the Cinderella of the century), we usually end up rooting for Rick, wherever he is!

Elizabeth,
We do have alot of orange clothes that we use for Syracuse sports. We will have to check out the Texas team so we don't have to change our colors. We will just put black tape over the Syracuse logo.

We are a basketball family, so we'll watch as much as we can. Especially since my father's beloved Gators are aiming for the repeat. And so many VA teams too!

Joann -- ooo, sorry to say we're rivals. But I can share the feeling -- This is how I (and my CT siblings) feel about UCONN's men team not being in it this year; although they had a terrible season, so we were prepared.
Although we watch both the men and women's NCAA here -- and the UCONN women are still going strong! (Oh well, except they lost the Big East finals to Rutgers ...but there's still hope!)
And I'm with Elizabeth -- find a new team and go all out! My dh will be pleased that I'll cheer for his teams this year -- he likes Coach K. And while I'm sure my dh knew, I didn't know that about Rick Barnes -- thanks for the info Elizabeth. I'll bet your a wealth of sports talk!
And Maria -- strangely enough I have two friends that went to school with Billy Donovan (one high school - one college), so just because of that, I've always been interested in seeing his teams play.

We are heavily into March Madness here in IL. We MUST root for any and all Big Ten contenders. Dh runs the family pool which is huge with six brothers, fil, cousins, nephews and close friends. It is a huge deal in our lives.
I only was a tad upset in 1997 when Dh forgot to drop off the programs for our wedding b/c he got caught up in the exciting semi finals.
Hope everyone has fun rooting for their teams.
Enjoy!
Marybeth

Oh, I am sorry...the original question is how to temper this during Lent. Really we don't. It is dh's favorite time of year...he indulges in few things...so I think it is fun to hear him cheering and enjoying himself.
Oops...he is traveling today and we are out of beer for his return.

Well, no ideas on how to temper, but I have to say, that I'm the only one in my family who is March Mad. I love college basketball (I used to be team manager for our men's team in college--not a really big contender though).

We love sports so March Madness it is. Plus my fil played basketball for many many years and then coached.
Go Blue - Michigan plays Florida State tonight!!! Hopefully we can pull out a win. I am sorry They do not play tonight as I originally thought but Michigan State does - whom I do not like nearly as much. I am still cheering for the Maize and Blue though!!!

So, I've never filled in brackets, as much as we love watching and following the games. So I decided to do one this year and I got the entire South Region correct! Not that I had any method to my um...madness.
Big game tonight, my dad's Gators!
And what about VCU? Awesome! Go VA Tech!

We are definitely a basketball family (main reason 16yods "went" to highschool. ) Just having completed his b'ball season, and 12 yods finishes his Tuesday, and 8 yods done with his, we are ready to watch the college teams!
My dh and I met while at U of MI, and had season basketball tickets for all four years. I really enjoy college b'ball as opposed to professional. My guys love it all.
My 18yods is at MSU, and they were glued to their sets last night.
I like the idea of praying during the commercials. I think we will implement that!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI
